Common Illness of Maltese

Signs Of Illness:
    
If your Maltese is frisky and playing one day and the
next day refuses food, is lethargic, or feels warm to you,
be alert for trouble.  Additional symptoms of possible
health problems include constipation, runny nose,
staggering, shivering, vomiting, lameness, restlessness, weight loss, obvious pain, watery eyes, coughing, and straining to urinate.

Skin Problems:
    The single, most irritating problem affecting
dogs, and seen most often by veterinarians, has
to do with skin irritations.
    Signs of skin problems may be itching, swelling, discoloration, scabs, hair loss, lumps and bumps,
red, sore, and moist patches of skin, scaling of the skin, or dandruff and purulent discharges.
Some causes of skin conditions are:
   Allergies, Seborrhea, Hot Spots, Eternal Parasites
(fleas, ticks, lice, mites, flies), lack of proper grooming, and injury to the body

Liver Shunt Problems:
   
Signs of liver shunts are
     *Failure to grow
     *Depression
     *Weak and listlessness
     *Seizures
     *Problems with balance
     *Vomiting and no or poor appetite
     *Bladder stones
     *some blindness
It is important that you have your dog
checked for liver shunt problems when it has it's annual physical examinations.

Kennel Cough: (canine cough syndrome)
   
Kennel cough is a dry, hacking cough.
Sometimes can lead to nausea, fever, loss of appetite.
In most cases kennel cough is a mild disease,
but should be treated to avoid any lasting
problems to the respiratory track.  Also can
lead to pneumonia if left untreated.
This is a highly contagious respiratory disease.
Your dog can pick up the disease from any
place were there are other affected dogs. 
They can catch the disease from exposure to
one infected dog.
