Fuzzy (known by myself and other initiates as "THE FUZZ"), began life
with a very serious health
problem.
He had a respriatory infection that had spread to his eyes which caused
them to swell to enourmous proportions. The first vet we took him
to told us to apply a salve to his eyes and "if he's still alive in a couple
of weeks, bring him back and we'll look at him again". Well, needless
to say, this was not appreciated. We then took Fuzz to Dr. Alger
(a good vet!), who told us that Fuzz only had two options: He could
be put to sleep or have the eyes removed. As Fuzz was so full of
life and spunk in spite of the pain and the inability to see, we had Dr.
Alger go ahead with the surgery. Medicine was also prescribed to
help with clearing up the infection. We were warned at the time that
he was still a very sick kitty. We had to apply compresses
to his stitches and make sure he took his medicine. As you can see,
he has recovered quite well and seems to be saying, with this look, "Yeah
I'm blind. You gotta problem with that?". Before
you begin to feel bad for him, please remember that he has never had the
ability to see; shadows at best when he was a kitten. As he is unaware
that he is handicapped, he does not act that way. The pictures here
of him on the kitchen counter were not posed. That is, he got up
there by himself and he gets down by himself. He loves ladders and
if a step ladder or a full-size "A" ladder is set up for any reason (we
are in the midst of a great deal of remodeling at this time), he is immediately
on it, going for the top, as you can see; again, not a posed picture!
This is not the sign of one who is handicapped! Hide and seek is
enourmously fun with him as he does not have the distraction of sight;
you cannot hide from him easily!
As you can see, he knows when you are there and responds very quickly
to his name! This is a very happy, healthy cat who enjoys his life
to the maximum in spite of his handicap. Watching him chase bugs
makes you aware that he does not allow the lack of sight to make his life
empty, and fills us all with joy that we gave him this chance to live.....and
he lives every moment!
We are also very proud of Fuzzy. in that he has been recognized with
this award!
