[Dogs Against Drugs]

Dogs Against Drugs is a volunteer organization serving school children. It pays no salaries and has no overhead; the work is done in the volunteers' homes. It is staffed by Marty Schwartz, Yofee, and two volunteers.

Already the recipient of a Merit Award for Community Service from the city of Santa Rosa, California, Yofee was selected the OUTSTANDING TEACHING ANIMAL OF 1991 by the Human Animal Bond Committee of the California Veterinary Medical Association, and has received presidential citations from both President Clinton and President Bush. She is trained for search and rescue, disaster, and drug work. She helped during the 1989 San Francisco earthquake, and the community-wide search for Polly Klass.

Dogs Against Drugs has reached out to more than 5,000 kindergarten through third grade school children in person and 50,000 children with our Anti-Second Hand Smoke coloring book. In 1991 every kindergarten through third grade school child in Sonoma County California and Washoe County Nevada received the coloring book. HILL'S PET PRODUCTS donated the funds for the printing.

The Dogs Against Drugs Program has paid off for thousands of school children. The program consists of introducing Yofee to each child, talking about her accomplishments (passing around her plaques and certificates), a talk about tobacco and addiction, and showing an anti-cigarette/second hand smoke video. We use a different video for each grade level. Each child is given an envelope to take home. The climax is when Yofee finds the training drugs that are hidden in the classroom before the lesson gets underway.

Dogs Against Drugs also developed a special K9 oriented program for learning disabled children. Yofee can teach them how to brush their teeth, do arithmetic, and how to avoid going with strangers. They have worked with three Special Education classes in the last three years. The organization wrote, and makes available to Special Education teachers, TEACHING DOG, a manual for teachers who work with these special children. We developed fifteen instructional videos for this program.

Dogs Against Drugs was very active during the Sebastopol, California community's attempt to install a stricter smoking ordinance. They distributed thousands of copies of the flyer Does SECOND HAND SMOKE PUT CHILDREN AT RISK?

Dogs Against Drugs has also turned their attention to educating 5th through 8th grade school children about HIV/AIDS as well as drugs. Educational material, such as A Children's Book About HIV/AIDS, and support documents that complement the book such as a test, a letter about HIV/AIDS for parents, and a teacher's guide, will be posted at this website. You can be comfortable knowing that all of our HIV/AIDS material is reviewed by the Ryan White Foundation for accuracy and appropriateness.
