Kramer the Emu

Kramer came to us as a rescue in May of 2004. His family was moving from a large lot to a tiny track home with no yard. ....How could we say no? they had named him "Mr E", but we thought he looked more like the Kramer from the Jerry Seinfeld show so we renamed him the day we brought him home.

Kramer was making a strange drumming sound in his throat in the evenings, and he was rubbing all the feathers off his neck pacing and rubbing against the wood on the round pen. Since I knew nothing about emus, the girls and I headed down to a local emu farm to get some advice. When we told them about the drumming sound they said, "Honey Kramer is not a 'he' he's a 'she'! Only the females make that sound....You should start getting eggs in the winter, close to 80 to be exact....large green eggs the size of a large avacado"...oh my.

A prehistoric throwback, this crazy bird is a hoot to watch. She has very powerful legs and can run faster than a race horse. She is VERY friendly and loves following us around the back yard sticking her long neck into everyone's business and picking through your hair or trying to steal anything shiney.

Kramer chases the pigs around when they get too close to her food, but her favorite game is to chase and be chased by our little 12 pound Miniature Pincher Mix, Sadie. They both love the game and will play for hours. Kramer peeks over the fence when Sadie is in the back yard and when Sadie looks at her, Kramer ducks her head back behind the fence. She then runs down the fence and pops her head up in a new place. "Peek a boo!"
