IF a rural but sophisticated lifestyle appeals to you...

IF you would like to be part of a dynamic Jewish community...

THEN Shorashim could be your next home.

Shorashim is a 15-year-old settlement located in the Misgav region of the western Galilee. It is approximately 7 kilometers southwest of Karmiel, and 50 kilometers northeast of Haifa.

Shorashim's Roots

The founders of Shorashim (a group of North Americans and Israelis) established a moshavshitufi (collective settlement) in 1980. The guiding themes were pioneering high-tech industry, building a strong and supportive community without compromising the autonomy of the family unit, and developing a cooperative relationship with our Arab neighbors. In December, 1992 Shorashim became a yishuv kehilati (community settlement). While preserving important elements of a strong community identity, each family is now responsible for its economic well-being.

Today Shorashim's population is 52 families (approximately 100 adults, 150 children, and assorted pets). Half the residents are native-born Israelis, and the other half are olim (immigrants) from North America, England, South America, and other countries.

Many of the residents are college graduates and all have previous work experience. While a small number of residents work in businesses on the moshav, the majority commute to various locations throughout the Galilee.

Shorashim's Jewish Spirit

Shorashim is affiliated with the Masorati (Conservative) movement. Religious services are led on a volunter basis by the members of the community every Friday evening, alternate Shabbat mornings, and on all holidays. All religious services are egalitarian, with men and women participating fully in all aspects of synagogue ritual. Holidays are observed communally, with both traditional worship and appropriate social and cultural events for adults and children, such as parties, dinners, and study sessions.

While the community observes Shabbat, individual members are free to follow their own consciences at home. Emphasis is on mutual respect of the practices of one's friends and neighbors in the community. The entrance gate is not locked on Shabbat.

Shorashim's Children

Ages three months to six years: Shorashim runs an excellent day care and nursery school through kindergarten program. Afternoon day care is also available.

First grade and up: School age children attend the Misgav Regional Community School, a large school located five kilometers south of Shorashim. The high school offers college preparatory studies as well as business administration classes, and majors in art, music and drama. The Regional Council provides buses throughout the day to transport children to and from classes and to the many extracurricular activities offered at the school in the afternoons.

The safe and protective rural setting lends itself to independence for the children, who enjoy friendships with their peers both on the settlement itself and with their classmates from other settlements.

Shorashim: Picture It

Quiet, safe and friendly all describe Shorashim's special atmosphere.

The landscaping is beautiful and the view, breathtaking. On a clear day the Mediterranean comes into view to the west. In springtime, the surrounding hills are covered with wildflowers. Summers are hot, but not too humid, with a pleasant, late afternoon breeze; winters are rainy, windy, and cold, but usually without snow.

Shorashim has its own library, basketball and tennis courts.
