TOP PERENNIALS FOR OUR ZONE

We have compiled a list of some of the most reliable perennials for our climactic zone (Canadian Zone 1b/2a).

Although some of these perennials are typically classified in gardening books as higher-zone plants, they can all be grown in our climate, especially if a mulch is applied around and over the plants before winter. Planting in sheltered areas of your property where there is a warmer micro-climate will also help to insure success.

Perennials listed as "evergreen" are especially susceptible to late winter/early spring frost damage, and should be covered in fall with a layer of dry leaves or straw. This should be left in place until temperatures are remaining above or just a few degrees below freezing overnight (usually early to mid-April...depending on the year). If possible, keep the mulch on hand so you can cover the plants again if a hard frost is forecast.

We have a list of approximately 20 plants for SUNNY AREAS,

and a list of approximately 20 plants for SHADY AREAS.
