The Campbells came from the Hebrides, the Isle of Lewis, near Stornoway to Quebec's Eastern Townships, in 1887, where there were relatives and work in the woods as lumbermen. They stayed there for 29 years and raised a family. In 1916 they joined their oldest son Donald in homesteading the Alberta prairies near Monitor. When they were dusted out in 1931 they settled right next to Isle Lake, a body of water that didn't disappear with the drought. My great grandpa Alexander built a replica of the Hebrides fishing boat of his youth and rowed and sailed it on the lake. He named it Rambler 81 after his old boat.

Donald and Christie came to Alberta in the Spring of 1912 to homestead at Monitor. They shipped their goods to Cadogan and hauled them by team to the homestead at Section 34-Township 35-R5-W4. They moved to the Fallis area in 1931 (SE3-54-5-W5). They lived at Fallis until 1943 when they moved to Edmonton. Donald worked for the sheep breeders association in the wool warehouse. He then worked in the Co-op store as a warehouseman, at North West Industries and for the FUA until his retirement. Donald was a good blacksmith and spent much of his time at the forge and working with horses. My mother used to turn the forge fan for him when he was shoeing horses or sharpening plough shares.

Donald married Edith Mills (Ball)* in March, 1963.

*Grandma Edith was a wonderful lady who we were all happy to call grandma, she was about five feet tall and had a house in Cloverdale which her first husband had built especially for her with short counters. She and grandpa lived there until he passed away.

BIOGRAPHY:
Donald left the Isle of Lewis in about 1888 at the age of four with his parents.

'Donald and his wife Jennie (Christie Jane MacDonald) went to Alberta in 1912 with their two daughters, Annie Isabel and Mary Jane. In 1911 Donald had come west and filed on the S.E. quarter of 34,35,5,4. With him at that time were Jenny's brother, Alexander MacDonald and her brother-in-law, Malcolm MacDonald. All three filed on adjoining quarters. On April 29, 1912 the three families arrived in Cadogan via the C.P.R. 'Colonist.' Also in the group were Donald's sister Katherine (Mrs. David Johnstone of Provost) and his brothers, Alexander and John.'

Donald was the postmaster at Whitton, Alberta for many years.

Donald and Jenny eventually moved to Edmonton. Jenny died in 1949 and in 1963 Donald was married to Edith (Ball) Mills.
