NARNIE'S WORLD HINTS
FOR INSIDE THE HOME

Here it is hoped you will be able to find some "hints" to help make the Time you spend working inside your home less or at least less frequently repeated
I AM TOO BUSY TO BE ORGANIZED

Trust and believe me when I say...I fail at this on a continueing basis...I am constantly in a state of trying to be organized...I have two wonderful boys who are always challenging me to stay organized...and I, like many of you,are always looking for new and improved ways to accomplish this feat...

Simple ideas to help get started

IF YOU ARE NOT A MORNING PERSON set up the coffee pot, lay out kids clothes, even set out the table ware before going to bed...this gives you a head start....

Let the kids make their own lunches...while your drinking that PLEASE wake me up coffee...and fixing their breakfast even first graders can put sandwiches together...and fill their lunch boxes...they will enjoy doing it...(the first few times anyway, and hopefully by the time they no longer think its fun they will be used to the routine)

Next time you take the trash bag out of the waste basket put several new bags in the bottom of the basket, now when the full one is removed the replacement is right there...also...this is a great place for one of those sick on room scenties or one like you hang in the car...

    Homemade Toothbrush Caddy

An old, washed out plastic pill bottle makes a wonderful toothbrush caddy for traveling. Simply cut a hole in the plastic cap large enough for a toothbrush handle to fit through, place the bottle over the head of the toothbrush and snap the cap in place. Voila! it'll keep bristles clean in your suitcase.

BOUNCE...Not just for the DRYER anymore

Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

Eliminates static electricity from your television screen. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.

Dissolves soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a used sheet of Bounce.

Freshens the air in your home. Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang one in the closet.

Prevents thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through a sheet of Bounce to eliminate the static cling on the thread before sewing.

Eliminates static cling from pantyhose. Rub a damp, used sheet of Bounce over the hose.

Prevents musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.

Freshens the air in your car. Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.

Cleans baked-on food from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in the pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti static agents apparently weaken the bond between the food and the pan while the fabric softening agents soften the baked-on food.

Eliminates odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.

Collects cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs.

Eliminates static electricity from venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.

Wipes up sawdust from drilling or sandpapering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

Eliminates odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

Deodorizes shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight so they'll smell great in the morning.

~I haven't tried this yet, but I'm planning to...
just as soon as my dryer quits running. Thanks Gal Friend for sending it to me~

I thought this was interesting..and something you might want to check out!

It's almost spring...and the heating unit went out on the dryer! Why does everything seem to fall apart this time of year!???

The guy that fixes things went in to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. We always clean the lint from the filter after every load of clothes. He told us that he wanted to show him something. He took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. Now, this thing is like a mesh - I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like - WELL.the hot water just laid on top of the mesh!!! It didn't go through it at all!!!

He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh and that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that???!!!! Learn something new everyday!

I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, thought I'd share!

Note: I went to dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water collected a little but ran though the screen. I dried it off and was ready to put it back in the dryer since the water ran through it but, I thought was the heck it won't hurt to wash it while I had it out. Warm soap water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds.

I then ran the water over the screen and what a difference the water just gushed through it with no puddling at all and this time I was running the water at a faster rate. That repairman knew what he was talking about.

NOTE FROM ME.....Think maybe those dryer sheets were invented by the Maytag guys just to finally give them some work?

    Kitchen

No More Rings Down The Drain Keep an extra large safety pin next to your kitchen sink, then thread your rings onto it and pin it to your clothes before you start washing dishes.

To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to a boil on stove-top-skillet will be much easier to clean now.

If you have problems opening jars: Try using latex dishwashing gloves. They give a non-slip grip that makes opening jars easy. Potatoes will take food stains off your fingers. Just slice and rub raw potato on the stains and rinse with water.

~NOW look what you can do with Alka-Seltzer~

Clean a toilet, drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets, wait twenty minutes, brush, and flush. The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous china.
Clean a vase. To remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase or cruet, fill with water and drop in two Alka-Seltzer tablets.
Polish jewelry. Drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the jewelry for two minutes.
Clean a thermos bottle. Fill the bottle with water, drop in four Alka-Seltzer tablets, and let soak for an hour (or longer, if necessary).
Unclog a drain. Clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka-Seltzer tablets down the drain followed by a cup of Heinz White Vinegar Wait a few minutes, then run the hot water.

    Bathroom

Clear Nail Polish Put clear nail polish on the bottom rim of your husband's can of shaving cream, it keeps it from leaving a hard to clean rust ring on the vanity or in the shower.

    Laundry Tips

If when doing the laundry, and you use liquid softner in the cycle as well as sheets in the dryer, and you run out of fabric softner sheets....Here is a way to get by in a pinch. Place some liquid softner on a face cloth or other small piece of cloth, and throw it in with the clothes in the dryer...

White, Bright Tennis Shoes...When washing tennis shoes, add a quarter cup of lemon juice to the final rinse of the washing cycle, they'll come out sparkling.

Plastic clothes baskets are cheap...get one for each family member and two extras (try to get all different colors)...fold clothes right into each family members basket...the extra baskets are for towels / linnens...odd socks...NOW give each family member his/her basket and wish them a happy journey to their closet and drawers. (POINT OF INTEREST...THIS WILL NOT WORK ON 90% OF HUSBANDS!) The odd sock basket??? Sunday afternoon while the game is on and most everyone is parked in front of the tube? Set it down in the middle of the room...announce pick your own socks out...they will do it (without even realizing it) and pass the basket around till its empty...stand near the door and the basket will be handed to you when it reaches that area...at halftime...or another break you need to go back and tell the kids to take the socks their rooms or else you will find them tucked between cushions tomorrow...(but they will be sorted out)...

    ~Windows and Mirrors~
Protect Your Curtains To keep curtains out of the way when you're washing windows or sills, loop them over a hanger, then hang he hanger from the curtain rod so the curtains will be protected from cleaning products.

Use air-freshener to clean mirrors: It does a good job and better still, leave a lovely smell to the shine

    Floors

Mopping Floors After mopping your bathroom and kitchen floors, place a fan n the doorway, it helps the floors dry extra-fast so you don't have to worry about anybody slipping.

    Coca Cola

Just when you thought you knew everything....

To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl. Let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola .

To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan; wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.

It will also clean road haze from your windshield.
~AND TO THINK WE DRINK THIS STUFF!!~

Clever Recipe Card Storage: Have you accumulated so many recipe cards that your collection has grown too large for your recipe box?
A child's outgrown lunch box makes a great file box for larger collections.
Keep Purses Fresh Stuff crumpled newspaper into your stored away handbags, the paper will absorb as well as help the purses keep their shape.
New Life For Silver Polish Silver polish doesn't have to be thrown out when it gets hard and dry. Simply add a bit of warm water and stir gently until it's creamy again then polish away!
Cleaner Screens Door and window screens get dirty fast. For a quick cleanup, remove the screen and scrub it with a dry nylon net scrubby to loosen the dirt (be sure to do this outside). Then vacuum the screen and put it back in the window.

    ~Kitty's Litter Box~
To help keep the cats litter box fresh...shred news papers into pieces and mix with baking soda...the papers will be recycled and easily discarded, and the box will smell fresh as a daisy....

    SMALL SHELF SAFE

Choose a book from the shelf...open the book and fan in a few pages fron the front and back of the book...cut a hole through the remaining pages, leaving 3/4 inch of page facing out...place small valuables here...undetectable to onlookers. Best not to use your favorite book for this project. (Just remember which book you did choose)

When you go to buy bread in the grocery store, have you ever wondered which is the freshest, so you "squeeze" for freshness or softness? Did you know that bread is delivered fresh to the stores five days a week?
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Each day has a different color twist tie.
    They are:
    Monday - Blue
    Tuesday - Green
    Thursday - Red
    Friday - White
    Saturday - Yellow
So if today was Thursday, you would want red twist tie - not white which is Friday's (almost a week old)!
The colors go alphabetically by color Blue - Green - Red - White- Yellow.
Monday through Saturday. Very easy to remember.

I thought this was interesting. I looked in the grocery store and sure enough the bread wrappers DO have different twist ties, and even the one with the plastic clips have different colors.
We learn something new everyday!!! Enjoy fresh bread when you buy bread with the right color on the day you are shopping.

    WD-40

I thought that you might like to know more about this well-known product. When you read the "shower door" part, try it. It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. It's a miracle! Then try it on your stovetop...Viola! It's now shinier than it's ever been. You'll be amazed.

The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a "water displacement" compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation, thus WD-40.

The Corvair Company bought it in bulk to protect their Atlas missile parts. The workers were so pleased with the product, they began smuggling (also known as "shrinkage" or "stealing") it out to use at home. The executives decided there might be a consumer market for it and put it in aerosol cans. The rest, as they say, is history.

It is a carefully guarded recipe known only to four people. Only one of them is the "brew master." There are about 2.5 million gallons of the stuff manufactured each year. It gets it's distinctive smell from a fragrance that is added to the brew. Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you.

Here are some of the uses:

    Protects silver from tarnishing
    Cleans and lubricates guitar strings
Gives floors that 'just-waxed' sheen without making it slippery
    Keeps flies off cows
    Restores and cleans chalkboards
    Removes lipstick stains
    Loosens stubborn zippers
    Untangles jewelry chains
Removes stains from stainless steel sinks
Removes dirt and grime from the barbecue grill
Keeps ceramic/terra cotta garden pots from oxidizing
    Removes tomato stains from clothing
Keeps glass shower doors free of water spots
Camouflages scratches in ceramic and marble floors
    Keeps scissors working smoothly
Lubricates noisy door hinges on vehicles and doors in homes
Gives a children's play gym slide a shine for a super fast slide
Lubricates gear shift and mower deck lever for ease of handling on riding mowers
Rids rocking chairs and swings of squeaky noises
Lubricates tracks in sticking home windows and makes them easier to open
Spraying an umbrella stem makes it easier to open and close
Restores and cleans padded leather dashboards in vehicles, as well as vinyl bumpers
Restores and cleans roof racks on vehicles
Lubricates and stops squeaks in electric fans
Lubricates wheel sprockets on tricycles, wagons and bicycles for easy handling
Lubricates fan belts on washers and dryers and keeps them running smoothly
Keeps rust from forming on saws and saw blades, and other tools
    Removes splattered grease on stove
    Keeps bathroom mirror from fogging
    Lubricates prosthetic limbs
Keeps pigeons off the balcony (they hate the smell)
Removes all traces of duct tape
I have even heard of folks spraying it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.

Florida's favorite use was "cleans and removes love bugs from grills and bumpers

The favorite use in the State of New York--WD-40 protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.

WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a LITTLE on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time. Also it's a lot cheaper than the chemical attractants that are made for just that purpose. Keep in mind though, using some chemical laced baits or lures for fishing are not allowed in some States.

Use it for fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately, and stops the itch. (along this line of use...an AVID Bingo player suggests taking an EMPTY and cleaned out Bingo Dabber filled with WD 40 for such a use.)

WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.

Also, if you've discovered that your teenage daughter has washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and re-wash. Presto! Lipstick is gone!

If you sprayed WD-40 on the distributor cap, it would displace the moisture and allow the car to start.

WD-40, long known for its ability to remove left-over tape mung (sticky label tape), is also a lovely perfume and air freshe ner!

Sprayed liberally on every hinge in the house, it leaves that distinctive clean fresh scent for up to two days! Seriously though, it removes black scuff marks from the kitchen floor!

Use WD-40 for those nasty tar and scuff marks on flooring. It doesn't seem to harm the finish and you won't have to scrub nearly as hard to get them off. Just remember to open some windows if you have a lot of marks.

    - Bug guts will eat away the finish on your car if not removed quickly! Use WD-40!
