I WAS MY DADDYS LITTLE MAN It was spring time 1948-49 about there some where in there little Stanley. was playing about the barnyard not hurting anything his mom called him over to the clothes line where the blankets were. hanging softly blowing they were dry and needed folding up... "Come here Stanley" (I hated Stanley part of my name).............. "Show me your hands, are they clean ?" what a question to ask a little, boy of my age. luck hit home they were. I with my little hands, Could hold the corners of the blanket tight, while mom folded them. Mom took the laundry in the house not before reminding me to stay put. She came out smiling with a six court basket covered with a towel. "What's that for mom?", I said smiling; knowing that there some goodies in that basket . She bent over and picked me up slowly and pointed towards the back field where my daddy was plowing with his horses. "Stanley can you see your dad with the horses way over there?" "Well I sure do, I can see my dad.Can I go mom?" "Oh yes you can", she said softly as she put me back on the ground... Well I made my way with my short little legs, just me stanley taking my dad his coffee and some home made cookies in this basket. It took a little while but I made it to where my dad had his team. Well you know he looked happy to see me, he put the plow to one side called me over and said, " What have you there my little man...?" I'll tell you folks today I'm somebody. I'm my dads little man.. My dad took hold of the basket opened up the jar of coffee took himself a drink, bit into a cookie and so did I . He told me one day he's going to get a tractor for the farm. Well the coffee was gone, so were the cookies. Dad put the basket up near the fence. My dad then with his big strong hands came over to me- I was wondering what was going to happen now. Well he picked me up held me face to face and he asked me if i would like to ride "Queenie". which was one of the team, and you know I could smell his scent plain and clear. I could see that special sparkle he had in his eyes; being a handsome man and needing a shave. "But what if I fall?", "Oh you won't fall my little man." "You hold on tight on these rings here if you need to" Oh I wish he would of hugged Me one more time that day. I wouldn't trade for anything.. We made a complete round and my dad said, "You want down son?"... "Not just yet dad ". Well I had me a full day for a little man. Oh yea, my dad's little man bye the way..... And you know my dad got his tractor the following spring of 1951 if my memory serves; that's right you guessed it, that's another story I would like to think that day my dad was very proud of his Little Man STAN.
