Norm DeWitt

Norm owns and pilots two beautiful and unique aerobatic airplanes: a black Christen Eagle ll, which he built himself, and a Zivko Edge 540, built to his specifications. Norm took 2300 hours spread over eight years to complete the Eagle. Since its completion in 1993, it has been on display at numerous airshows including Oshkosh, Edwards AFB, and Watsonville. The plane has won a Homebuilders Award at Watsonville in 1995, and best Eagle and best homebuilt at Half Moon Bay in 1996. It has also been selected, twice, to fly Air Force Test Pilot School students at the USAF Test Pilots School.

Norm’s new aerobatic airplane is an Edge 540. The Edge is truly an “extreme machine”, with a roll rate above 400 degrees per second, high thrust to weight, and extraordinary vertical penetration.

Norm’s flying experience spans more than 35 years. He has flown gliders, ultralights, as well as seaplanes at one end of a spectrum, and the F-15 and F-16, as a civilian, at the other end. He has a DC-3 type rating and holds a commercial pilots license.

In 1999, he flew air shows at the Reedley Return to Sherwood Air Show, Madera Central Valley Fly In, Wings Over Moffett Air Show, Golden West Fly In at Castle AFB, Kingman Wings and Wheels, and the Napa Valley Air Show. Norm has also performed at the Edwards AFB Open House and the Beale AFB Open House.

Norm currently competes in all the California IAC Aerobatic Contests in the Unlimited category. In March 2000, he won the The Championships of the Americas in the Advanced category held at Chandler, AZ. He lives on the San Francisco Peninsula and is based at San Carlos Airport.
