Charleston Hurricanes
2000 Record

5-2

On March 4, 2000 the Charleston Hurricanes defeated Cape Fear 12-10.  The victory came down to the final quarter until the game was decided in the Canes favor.

"There was as much as 6 inches of water in the crease......to he** with technique, I just started dropping," says the Charleston net minder (Keith Blandford).

In the driving rain the Hurricanes started their 2000 season with a win!

March 19th of this seasons marks the first time that Aiken and Charleston have played since tensions soared in a game ended brawl last season.  This season Aiken once again fell short of the challege losing 14-9.

"The game would never have been that close if we didn't hurt ourselves so much," says Clark Seaton, the Hurricanes veteran defenseman.

The Victory starts a regular season win streak for the Canes.

Cape Fear Away

On Saturday, April 8, 2000, the Canes played their second installment in the home and away regular season with Cape Fear Lacrosse.

"I was really excited to keep the win streak alive, but I know they have a tough crowd,"  says second year all-purpose player, Greg "Terror" Martin.

Well the excitement showed as Martin electrified the Hurricane's faithful followers with his first career goal; giving the Canes a 1-0 head start.  But Cape Fear was not set back by the Canes initial energy and took an 8-4 lead into the half.
Controversy started in the fourth quarter when Goal Keep, Keith Blandford took a shot to the abdomen which caused him to take a knee.

"I don't know what happened, I was yelling for the slide and then I couldn't breath.  I am sure its a midfielder's fault."

After Blandford was struck by the ball, two shots were taken, the second (clearly a piper) was called a goal.  This did not end the controversy.  After battling back from a 4 goal deficit in the 4th to tie the game, the official claimed the scored to be 14-12.  Much to the dismay of the Hurricanes, this call stood and cost the Hurricanes their first regular season loss.
Final score 14-13.

After a string of road games, the Hurricanes relished their return home to Sullivan's Island.  They came out gunning early against Asheville and had built a sturdy lead heading into the half.
"I felt like we were on a role and nothing could stop us," said rookie attackman, John Hughes.
The Team finished the game with a hard fought victory, 10-2.
MVP - Mike, Rookie Long Stick Middie

The next game did not come as easy for the the Hurricanes as they had a game off before they took on the Marines.  The fast legs they had in the first game had slowed.
"I tried eating some bananas, but it just didn't work," said midfielder Rob DeMoura.
But the Hurricanes battled with the gritty Marines and came out victorious, improving their record to 4-1 after the weekend interconference play.
MVP - Keith, Veteran Goalie

The Charleston Hurricanes would like to thank both Camp Lejeune and Asheville for making the trip to Charleston.  The Hurricanes will now enjoy a weekend of rest as they celebrate Easter and prepare for the Atlanta Tournament.
