Robert Craig Knievel was born in Butte, Montana on October 17, 1938. He was raised by his grandparents and at the age of eight saw the Joey Chitwood Auuto Daredevil Show which he credits for his later career choice to become a motorcycle daredevil. In 1965 Robert Knievel began his daredevil career when he formed a troupe called Evel Knievel's Motorcycle daredevils a touring show in which he performed stunts such as riding through flaming fire walls, jumping over live rattlesnakes and mountain lions, and being towed at 200 miles per hour behind dragster race cars holding onto a parachute. In 1966 he began touring alone, barnstorming the western states, he drove the truck, built his own ramps, promoted his performances and then did his dangerous motorcycle jumps. In the beginning he charged $500 to jump two cars parked between his ramps. He then steadily increased the distance between the two ramps and on New Years Day, 1968, he jumped 151 feet accross the fountains of Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. Although he cleared the fountains his landing was a disaster, bounced off the motorcycle and thrown like a rag doll down the landing ramp and into the dirt, his injuries landed him in a coma for thirty days. The footage of the near fatal crash landing is said to be the most incredible sports footage of the centuury, it was shot by John Derek and when Evel awoke from his coma the tape was at his bedside. The cycle used at the Caesar's Palace jump has never been located, after the crash no one knows what became of the cycle. Evel continues to search for the cycle to this day. Evel continued to jump and entertain millions of people, a true hero of all the children raised in the seventies, he often spoke prior to a jump and advised his crowd to abstain from illegal drug use and alcohol abuse, as a result his viewing audience continued to grow.

On September 8, 1974 Evel attempted to jump the Snake River Canyon but a faulty parachute deployment ssent his X-2 Skycycle into the Canyon as millions watched around the world. Evel had planned on jumping the Grand Canyon but U.S. Officials refused to grant him permission fearing he would kill himself on Government Land. Evel's attempt to do the unthinkable was yet another message to the youth of the Country to believe in themselves and that anything was possible.

Evel returned from the Snake River jump to perform in London where he attempted to jump a long line of buses... the last bus was his downfall.

To this day, there has not been another figure which has been an icon to so many children, adults, not only in the U.S., but worldwide. Evel Knievel will go down in history as the greatest stuntman that has ever lived. His red, white, and blue leather suits and motorcycles, a symbol of the USA, will always be associated with " Evel Knievel ".
