T.S. PELLEW AFFILIATIONS

All Sea Cadet units in the UK are affiliated to a ship in the Royal Navy. This means that they have a close link with that particular ship and its ships company. Cadets can keep in touch with people on the ship and are often given the chance to visit the ship or go out to sea.

H.M.S. (HER MAJESTY’S SHIP) CORNWALL

T.S. Pellew has been on a number of visits to and trips with HMS Cornwall. The first was being during her sea trials before commissioning. Truro cadets have enjoyed having a close association with HMS Cornwall and one ex cadet was even a member of this Ships company as his first posting in the Royal Navy during 1998.

Above is a picture of the type 22 batch (3 Frigate) and the Cornish crest which is featured prominently around the ship and is used as the ships crest.

HMS Cornwall is capable of defending herself and attacking targets either above or below the sea. She has a crew of 237 Officers and Ratings who are both male and female.

HMS Cornwall weighs 4850 tonnes, is 148.1 metres long and 14.75 metres wide. She has a large amount of weaponry and usually carries one rotary wing aircraft (helicopter) usually a Lynx but can be a SeaKing ASW or Merlin HM Mk 1.

Ships in the Royal Navy are like small communities, there are comfortable dining halls that are situated adjacent to the galleys (kitchens). Senior Ratings live in Cabins and Junior Ratings live in messdecks that have their own recreational area with a television. When Sea Cadets stay on board they live with the junior Ratings and are in all ways possible treated as a part of the Ships Company

ON SUNDAY 21 MARCH 1999 SEA CADET FROM TRURO SCC WILL BE VISITING HMS CORNWALL KEEP AN EYE OUT HERE FOR DETAILS AND PICTURES OF THE VISIT

T.S. PELLEWS NEW AFFILIATION – 700M SQUADRON

Our unit has just been told that we have a new affiliation to the 700M Squadron at RNAS (Royal Naval Air Station) Culdrose.

Above is a picture of the squadrons logo and some pictures of the Merlin in action.

The 700M squadron is the first of its kind in the Royal Navy to have the new Merlin HM Mk1 helicopter pictured above which is slowly replacing the SeaKing.

The primary role of this Squadron is to evaluate and support the introduction of the Merlin HM Mk1 helicopter into front line Naval service.

On March 1st our 700M liason officer visited the unit as a VIP for divisions. During his visit he presented us with a plaque of 700M squadron which will be officially presented at the end of the month with the reply of the TS Pellew plaque in front of the press

Keep your eyes on this page for pictures of Truro units visits to the squadron and some more interesting facts about it.
