MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE MARINE CADETS

Through out the year the Marine Cadets have four main events these are Pier Cellars and the National annual camp, field assessment, and drill competition.

Pier Cellars

This is the MCD easter camp for the South West Area which is held a Pier Cellars which is an old Torpedo Loading Bay for Submarines near Torpoint Cornwall. The camp is held for 5 days (Sunday to Friday) with many activities including full bore shooting, field craft training and spending 3 days and 2 nights in the field. The annual assault course event is also held on the week which is about a mile and a half long which ends with a dive into the harbour. Through out the week each Marine Cadet Detachment is assessed and at the end of the week the best will be awarded with the "Bartons Boot" which they will keep at their unit for the year.

Annual Camp

Every year the location of the annual camp changes. The camp is usually held during the summer holidays and lasts for 10 days. Detachments from all over the country come to the annual camp and for the last 2 years we have had cadets from the Marine Cadets in Malta. Again this is another action packed camp with many activities such as Abseiling, canoeing, shooting, map work, weapon handling, and field craft. Through out the camp the cadets work as a Troop (28 cadets) with each Detachment split into 3 or 4 Troops, so by the end of the camp you have made new friends from other Detachments. These friends are ones that you keep through out your cadet career.

Field Assessment

This is a compulsory event which must be attended by all of the Detachments. The assessment is held over a weekend during which each Detachment will be assessed on three field craft skills. The Assessment is carrried out by a serving Royal Marines officer, usually a Major and a serving Royal Marine Colour Seargent. At the end of the weekend the results are given and they go towards the overall grade of the Detachment and the Unit for the year.

Drill Competition

This is held at HMS Drake in Plymouth. Again this is a compulsory event and is held in two parts. THE INSPECTION – Each Member of the Detachment is inspected in their best uniform, marks are given for boots, hair cut, fitting of the uniform, and creases.. THE DISPLAY – The detachment is marked on a fix routing with weapons for receiving a VIP and a free display with weapons, marks are given for effectiveness of moves and difficulty of moves.

The overall result will go towards the grade of the Detachment and the Unit for the year.
