RHP Chris Carpenter Cheek & Mouth Out indefinitely September 16, 2000

Joey Hamilton --Toronto starter Joey Hamilton left after three innings because of a strained right shoulder. Hamilton, who went to the mound at the start of the fourth before coming out, had shoulder surgery in September 1999.

Chris Carpenter --Carpenter looked as if he had a baseball stuffed in his right cheek Sunday. The Toronto pitcher was hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of Chicago's Jose Valentin in the eighth inning of the Blue Jays' 6-3 loss Saturday night. He received 18 stitches inside his mouth. There was no fracture and no eye damage, a team spokesman said, although Carpenter will be examined again Monday. Blue Jays manager Jim Fregosi said Carpenter will be sidelined for seven to 10 days.

Frank Castillo --Right-handed starting pitcher Frank Castillo has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right forearm and strained ligament. Castillo pitched 2 and a little bit before injuring his arm in a game against the Minnesota Twins on August 13. Up until his injury, Castillo, 31, had won eight straight games and had a record of 9-5 with a 3.86 ERA. Castillo will be replaced in the Jays pitching rotation by right-hander Joey Hamilton. Hamilton is returning to the club after undergoing shoulder surgery last September.

Raul Mondesi --Toronto slugger Raul Mondesi will undergo elbow surgery next Monday and will miss the rest of the season. Mondesi has been on the 15-day disabled list since July 22 with an elbow ligament problem. The decision to schedule surgery came after consultations with three orthopedic physicians: Allan Gross of Toronto, Frank Jobe of Los Angeles and John Uribe of Coral Gables, Fla. The Jays said, John Uribe, a consulting orthopedic physician for the Miami Dolphins, will perform the surgery in Coral Gables. It is expected that Mondesi will be ready for the start of the 2001 season. Mondesi was hitting .272 with 24 homers and 67 RBI in 95 games. He is one of five Toronto players with 20 or more homers and also leads the club with 22 stolen bases.

Homer Bush --Bush was scratched from Monday game lineup and had X-rays, which were negative. But he was examined by Oakland Athletics team orthropedist Dr. Jerrald Goldman, who diagnosed a non-displaced fracture of the fourth metacarpal in the back of Bush's hand. Bush suffered the injury in Sunday's 10-6 loss at Seattle when he was hit by a pitch from righthander Jose Paniagua. Jim Fregosi said, "I'll play (Craig) Grebeck there, and when he gets tired, I'll play (Chris) Woodward."
