OUR SERVICE PROJECTS

We have tried to keep busy by fulfilling our Girl Scout Promise to serve others....

--Fall 97, we collected cat and dog food and donated it to the Carter County Animal Shelter.

--September 97, we built and donated a bat house to our school's Outdoor Classroom.

--Christmas 97, we delivered Christmas cards to the Life Care Center of Elizabethton, a local nursing home.

--Spring 98, we collected children's books to donate to a local women's shelter.

--Fall 98, we sent "care packages" (postcards and food) to a team of female hikers (Bugbite is a Gold Award recipient!) who traveled the Appalachian Trail this summer and fall.

--Fall 98, we collected canned food for the local food bank.

--Fall 98, we donated money to Global ReLeaf, an organization that plants trees, especially in stripped rainforest areas.

--November 98, we "adopted" Elaine, the manatee, through the Save the Manatee Club in Florida. It will help further research to save these unusual and endangered animals. We also donated an information notebook about manatees to our Council's library for other Girl Scouts to use and enjoy.

--Christmas 98, we participated in Operation Christmas Child, stuffing shoeboxes with toys and things for children in poverty and war-torn areas all over the world.

--March 99, we donated 2 cases of Girl Scout cookies to a local Meals on Wheels chapter.

--April 99, we joined with Junior Troop 17 to help refurbish a flood-damaged trail at Tipton-Haynes State Historical Park in Johnson City.

--April 99, we donated a silver maple tree to our school's Outdoor Classroom.

--Christmas 99, we once again participated in Operation Christmas Child, along with the other troops in our Service Unit.

--February 2000, we sponsored a bicycle safety workshop for the K-1 graders of the afterschool program at our school. We emphasized the importance of wearing a helmet while bike riding, and we donated 2 helmets to the ESP program for the kids to use.

--March 2000, we painted slates with "Friend" in foreign languages to donate and display at our school's outdoor classroom. We got the idea from the Peace Pole, but wanted to do it a little differently!

--March 2000, 2 of our Juniors organized and put up a display about Girl Scouting and Girl Guiding around the world. This was shown at the Elizabethton/Carter County Public Library in honor of Girl Scout Week. They also had hopes thier display would attract more girls and adults to Girl Scouting in our county.

--April 2000, we hosted a Hunger Banquet to raise community awareness about hunger. We asked each guest to donate a can of food to the Second Harvest Food Bank, and extra money leftover from our event was donated to this local food bank.

--December 2000, we collected hats to donate to the local children's cancer center.
