Plant propagation

At this side you can find usefull hints on germination conditions, transplanting and propagation of those genera in my trading list, that need special techniques to get satisfactory results

ACACIA

The hot water method is best to crack the strong seed coat.
Put the seed in a coffee-cup and fill with boiling water. Let stand for 1 day. Then put in a small box between wet kitchen-paper. When the germs apear plant into a 1/1 mix of course sand or better perlite and sieved commercial available plant propagation substrate on the basis of peat.
Put a small hole in the substrate and set the seed with the germ downwards so deep that it's just covered with the substrate.
Keep humid and do not expose to full sunlight until the first true leaves have developed. As the small plants rapidly develop a large root, it's best to transplant in a larger pot when the second pair of leaves has developed.

CALLISTEMON

All Callistemon species have ultrafine seeds. Sow on top of a humid 1/2 mix of fine perlite and sieved commercial available plant propagation substrate on the basis of peat.
Spray a little bit, so that the seeds are driven into the wholes of the substrate surface.
Cover the pot with a glass-plate and put at a shaddowed warm place. After germination (2-3 weeks)you should eliminate too dense standing seedlings by using tweezors.
Keep humid and eliminate the glassplate after the first true leaves have developed.
As the small plants rapidly develop a large root, it's best to transplant in a larger pot when the second pair of leaves has developed.

CASSIA

CANARINA

Canarina seeds need low temperatures to germ. It is best to start in winter (zones 10-11) or early spring (zones <10). Sow on top of a humid 1/2 mix of fine perlite and sieved commercial available plant propagation substrate on the basis of peat.
Spray a little bit, so that the seeds are driven into the wholes of the substrate surface.
Cover the pot with a glass-plate and put at a full shaddow cool but frost-protected place. Germination will occur within 4 weeks.
Eliminate too dense standing seedlings by using tweezors.
After the second pair of true leaves has developed transplant in pots with humus-rich substrate.
Grow in semishaddow. Once established the plants exhibit vigorous growth and should be fertilized with kompost or other organic fertilizers. In late summer watering should be reduced allowing the plants to reduce themselves to a strong root that can be cept nearly dry until winter (10-11) or spring.
Without watering this root will start to grow, when the conditions (cool enough and humid air) are optimal

CISTUS

Cistus seeds need low temperatures to germ. It is best to start in winter (zones 10-11) or early spring (zones <10). Sow on top of a humid 1/1 mix of sand and sieved commercial available plant propagation substrate on the basis of peat.
Spray a little bit, so that the seeds are driven into the wholes of the substrate surface.
Cover the pot with a glass-plate and put at a full shaddow cool but frost-protected place. Germination will occur within 4-8 weeks.
Eliminate too dense standing seedlings by using tweezors.
After the second pair of leaves has developed transplant in pots with a sand-rich welldrained substrate.
Grow in semishaddow.

SCHINUS

Pepper tree seeds have a resinous surface. It's best to put the seeds in warm to hot water with some drops of dishwasher and to rub between 2 pats of "Scotch Brite"
Then let swell in the water over night and rub a second time.
Wash the seeds in a kitchen sieve until all dishwasher is eliminated.
Keep humid and do not expose to full sunlight until the first leaves are fully developed. As the small plants rapidly develop a large root, it's best to transplant in a larger pot when the second pair of leaves has developed.
