WOLVES
The Wolf is amember of the canidae family which comprise of 35 different variaties and include the likes of the jackal the fox the hyena the african wild dog etc. The largest and most powerfull of the family is the timber wolf, it grows up to 6feet in lenth and weighs about 110 pounds,they have very strong limbs and large feet and a broad forehead they are native to north america and as there name suggests they live in largely forested areas,when you consider that there main source of food is buffalo then you realise that there sturdy build is absolutly essential for there suvival.At present these wolves are restricted to certain parts of Canada and at present are not threatened by much at present being that they are inareas that are afforded some sort of protection.The timber wolves in Canada are a sucsess story that is unfortunatly not the case for wolves in europe. Croatia.In croatia there is estimated to be about 50 wolves in the regions of Gorski katar and Lika,before the 1950's there was about 800 wolves in the region of Croatia,but since then they have been persecuted a great deal and in the 50's and 70's even had a bounty on their heads.There are though people in this part of the world that are very concerned about the preservation of wolves and who are very dedicated .If you are one of these people please E-Mail me at stephen.rowea@mailcity.com. Spain.Spain presently has 70% of western europes wolf population.The present number of wolves in spain stand at about 1500 in is about 2000 when the pups are being born which is in may.they are mainly in the mountain and coastal areas of the north of spain, for example Valladalid near Castilla-leun which is about half an hours drive from madrid, has about 35 wolves living there. The wolf that is native to spain is the brown wolf and is slightly smaller than the gray wolf.the brown wolf in spain has undergone persicution in the past and is still persicuted to this day but dispite the negative attitude some people hold towards the wolf in spain.there are fourtunatly a lot of people in spain who are envolved in protecting the wolf. Britain has no wolves and hasent had for 400 when the last wolf was killed.This is a disaster story and tells you something about the sort of people who own the land in Britain. I woul personaly like to see large parts of scotland turned into national parks where wolves could be released into. Our own dogs could be used to stok these parks depending on the phisical nature of the dogs we use,for example otterhounds foxhounds are very capable of hunting and all our dogs are descendents of wolves and jackals so it would be very appropriate to use our own dogs rather than importing wolves because someone has the idea that a wolf fits only into a certain what might be called cannine racial type.I would like to persue and research this idea further so if you have any ideas or suggestion please contact me.
