1) Family name: Pardalotidae
2) Scientific name: Dasyornis
broadbenti litoralis
3) English name: Rufous Bristlebird
4) Subspecies survival status: Extinct
5) Former distribution:. In
South Australia and western Victoria from the Glenelg River west along
the coast of South Australia to the Coorong.
6) Current distribution: None.
7) Habitat: Coastal thickets
of Coast Beard-Heath Leucopogon parviflorus, Coast Daisy-bush Olearia axillaris,
Boobialla Myoporum insular and Coast Wattle Acacia longifolia, often with
Coast Sword-Sedge Lepidosperma gladiatum and Knobby Club-Rush Isolepis
nodosa growing among them. Tolerates human settlement where sufficient
vegetation has been retained.
8) Reasons for decline: Declines
have occurred as result of clearance for agriculture (confirmed), and clearance
for urban development (confirmed). Predation by Foxes (speculative), grazing
by Rabbits (speculative) and apparently high rates of infertility (speculative)
have also been suggested as threats. The distribution being essentially
linear, the population has been particularly vulnerable to fragmentation.
Whether the confirmed and speculative threats are compromising the long-term
survival of the population is not known.
