Good day to you. My name is Frank O'Hara Parish. I am writing to you so that you may know that I am aware that my "liberation" is indeed "bound" up with that of Australia's koorie people. I am a thirty-eight year old African -American male who has been offered the opportunity to come to your country to study at the University of South Australia's Aboriginal studies program beginning December of 2000. First let me say that I want to show you all the respect that you are deserve for your courageous struggles against the forces that you face. I also want to say if by some manner of ignorance or cultural faux pas the words or ideals in this correspondence offend you or any of the elders associated with your various organizations, I humbly apologize now and ask for your forgiveness. I chose to study in Australia because I desire to learn about Aboriginal culture and about myself as a member of the global community. The second reason I chose your country is that I want to develop multi-media curriculums on the Aboriginal people and c lture for Anthropology departments in the USA and for Distance Education systems across the globe. By Distance Education I mean using satellites, Internet graphic and text databases, and CD-ROM dictionaries to disseminate information on your struggles an cultural practices. As an African-American I am well aware of the effect of prejudice, poverty, and injustice, because I have experienced all of them through out the course of my journey through life. Infact the ideal for creating multi-media courses was born out of my perso al struggle to find substantive meaning for my life. And as a way to fight the darkness that has enveloped the African -American community, which is being, battered daily by drugs, violence, and racism. I started this journey to find solutions over ten years ago by gathering video taped material on the links which bind Africa's dispersed communities in the western hemisphere. The project I started was called the HOMEBOUND TRAIN. As a result I have been t Africa to discuss the possibilities of distance education systems in the nation of Zimbabwe as a guest of the commonwealth of Learning. And Although I have had to overcome many forms of resistance to my project from members of my own community and from e ucators who insist that unless I have a degree the information is useless I have found and created a global net work of support for the project. So I decide that if I must have a degree then I want it to be in a field that will expand and strengthen my original goal which is to educate, and strengn the available information on overlooked and oppressed cultures. Now I finally get to the main reason I am writing to all of the individuals and organization that I've sent this E-mail letter to. When I arrive in Australia I will begin my studies, and in my spare time I want to begin the initial stage of information ga hering for the multi-media curriculum on Aboriginal people. I do not see myself as an expert but as a learner in search of teachers, research grants, and individuals that will share with me their knowledge.
