Aim: How do we use the Internet to learn about the rainforest?

Schedule:

DAY ONE

Use the Internet room as a group to look up one site chosen by the teacher. There should be two computers available and two teachers. Therefore there will be two groups: each looking at a different site and roaming through it. The students may click on any hyperlink within the website.

DAY TWO

Use the Internet room as a group to look up one of a group of sites chosen by the teacher. There should be two computers available and two teachers. DAY THREE AND FOUR

Use the Internet room as a group to look up one of a group of sites chosen by the teacher. There will be a group of questions that must be answered based on information from each of the sites visited. There should be two computers available and two teachers. Therefore there will be two groups: each looking at a different sites and roaming through them. The students may click on any hyperlink within the websites. Write up the answers for homework.

DAY FIVE

The students will orally report back to class. In the report they will include the following information: how they liked the activity, what they learned about computers, what they learned about the Internet, what they learned about the rainforest and the answers to the specific questions about the sites visited.

DAY SIX

The students will hand in the written versions of the reports that they presented the previous class.

Tropical rainforest in Surinam: there is a guided tour of a South American rainforest including pictures. There is a description of the plants, animals and people who live there.

Tropical rainforest coalition: has information for schools and projects that students can get involved in. There is also a story written by a 17 year old woman who was a native to the rainforest and who died of cancer. (The story takes a long time to receive from the Internet.)

There is a group of photographs from a man’s trip to the Amazon River Basin area in 1996. There are pictures of people, places, insects, the river, etc., but there are few words describing the photos.
