The Magic Seeds

by Bill Duca

This is a story about Kyle and his brother Eric. They are asked to go on a journey to a far away place with mythical beings and a dragon that guards the mountain top.

It was early in the morning when the king's messenger knocked on the door and called Kyle's name. "Open the door in the name of the good king, Aris", he called. When Eric and Kyle came to the door and opened it they saw a great warrior from Good King Aris' Army. He said "Come quickly, the King needs you to go on a mission of great importance". The brothers told him they would go to the castle right away to find out what was the matter.

The kings castle was on top of a great hill. A ditch, filled with water, called a moat, surrounded the castle. A large drawbridge was lowered over the water so that the king and his men could cross over without getting wet.

Kyle and Eric arrived at the castle gates wondering what could be so important. The king's men let them in and they were taken to the great hall where the old king waited for them. "come close so you can hear me", he said. "I need you to go on a long and difficult journey". "Yes your highness, where do you want us to go", they replied?

The good king told them about an old man he had met in the village many years ago. He was a young lad and not even king yet. The old man told him, "soon all the people in the village would grow very hungry because they do not have any seeds for the gardens. You can save the village people by getting some magic seeds from the valley beyond the great mountains. You will find a cabin on a small hill beside the river. In the cabin you will find an old man and if you tell him that I sent you, he will give you some magic seeds. With these seeds you will be able to feed the whole village for many years. You will find the trail difficult and you must get passed the dragon on the mountain top".

Kyle and Eric began their journey through the village and the countryside they had known all their lives. They went past the villagers and friends who waved to them and cheered them on saying, "good luck and have a safe trip". They walked all day, stopping only for water and some lunch they had packed. When night time came they layed in their sleeping bags and fell fast asleep. The second day brought Kyle and Eric into a new land filled with beautiful birds and animals of all kinds. About noontime on the second day, they climbed up a large tree in the forest to see what was ahead of them and look for the pass that will bring them to the mountain. The trip had been easy to walk so far but the trail started to climb up towards the mountains and became more difficult to climb. Eric saw some deer playing in a grassy meadow, eating fresh greens and playing near a small stream. This place looked so peacefull to him. Kyle was looking for danger and anything that might keep them from their mission. Together they walked happily along the trail. They saw only singing birds and happy animals, there were no signs of the dragon.

After a rest and some lunch it was up, up to the mountain top. The trail had become more difficult to climb and soon they were climbing over fallen trees and large rocks. The climbing was slow and they needed to rest often. When the sun started to go down and night was coming, Eric and Kyle made camp for the night on the side of the great mountain. The day had been tiring and difficult for them so they fell sound asleep in a short time.

The sun had barely come up and it was still dark down in the valley, when they awoke to a thunderous noise. "It must be the dragon on top of the mountain", Eric said. "We cannot be afraid because the people in the village are counting on us", was Kyle's reply. So off they went up to the dragon, they were very brave indeed. When they reached the top they could see it was barren and sad looking. No flowers or trees or even grass grew there.

The dragon came out of his cave and said, "Why have you come here and what do you want? Don't you know I am the mean Dragon and ruler of the mountain top"? Eric walked over to the dragon and said, "You must be very lonely up here all by yourself". The dragon sat down and said, "I am lonely because I have no friends, no one comes to play with me". Kyle sat down next to the dragon and said, "You have no friends because you are a big bully and everyone is afraid of you". "But I am a fierce dragon, this is the way I must be", he replied. "Maybe you have been a bully because you did not know you could be a good dragon. A good dragon would have a lot of friends and be very happy", Kyle explained. The boys told the dragon they would be his friends if he didn't scare them or be mean. Soon the happy dragon was dancing around and playing for the first time.

When they were leaving to get the magic seeds, the dragon asked them to come and visit him on their way back to the village. Kyle and Eric were very happy walking the rest of the journey. They walked along the river for two days before the cabin came into view. The garden at the cabin was green and full of wonderful things to eat, including strawberries and pumpkins. The old man was not there so they sat down beside the scarecrow and rested. The berries looked nice and they were hungry but it was not their garden. Their lunch bag held only one apple so they split it and each had a half. The scarecrow suddenly said, "Have some berries, they are quite good". Eric and Kyle, jumped up and said, "scarecrows can't talk". The old man laughed and said' "I'm not a scarecrow now because of you". "What do you mean", they asked? "well", he explained, "When children are good, many happy things can happen. You must be good because you found this nice place. Bullies and mean people can never get here". "You must take these magic seeds and bring them to your village. I also have some seeds for your new friend, Mr Dragon". "How did you know that", they asked, "We did not tell you"? The wise old man explained to them, "Sometimes people know when you have been good and when you have not".

Kyle and Eric went back to the village and to mr dragon. The mountain top was beautiful again and there was plenty of food in the village, all because two children were nice to other people.

Would someone be happy if you were nice?
