Introduction

The tropics has a warm and humid climate and plentiful rainfall. There is no distinct cool season. It is necessary to grow succulents in a position sheltered from rain and also from full day sun. The high temperatures year round translate to a very high evaporation and transpiration rate. The water loses on a hot day can easily dry up the soil in a small pot. It is thus necessary to water succulents more often and whenever is required.

Succulents from the lowland tropics generally grow and flower well in Singapore. For example, succulents from Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania, Somalia are more tolerate of our hot climate and surprising more tolerant of excessive water and less prone to rot. Succulents from the more temperature South Africa and Namibia are much more difficult. Those that originate from the western cape of southern Africa (Namaqualand) needs a cooler and less humid environment that cannot be created here, unless you have a cool house. However, those that originate from the eastern seaboard of southern Africa (Natal, Eastern Cape Province) can adapt to our hotter and humid conditions. Also do not expect succulents from a more temperate land to flower. You will be considered luck if you ever get some of them to flower. Take a look at the list of succulents which I have tried and my observations.
