PROJECT TWENTY-FOUR
DISTANCE

"Tis distance lends enchantment to the view,
And robes the mountain in its azure hue."
-- Thomas Campbell

Distance is relative. And with some of your relatives, the greater the distance, the better.

The distance from the earth to the moon is a bit under 239,000 miles and is increasing by about an inch and a half a year. This is still less than one fourth the distance that a certain one of my relatives is getting his brain waves piped in from.

Now, why would anybody ever want to travel? Is everything worth doing such a great distance away that you need to travel, or can you find enough fun to keep you busy staying home?

On the other hand, riding your bike a great distance is a lot of fun. Not that you need to go anywhere, but it's fun to brag about how far you can ride in a day. Century rides (100 miles in one day) are now very popular. Double centuries are becoming popular. Triple centuries are not unknown. A guy named Pete Penseyres recently rode a bicycle 600 miles in one day. I don't know why. Maybe he just likes distance. There's a club called the International Ultra Marathon Bicycle Club that you can join by riding two double centuries back to back. I'm not a member.

Yes, I know a lot of folks who stand too close. Especially when I'm riding on the Metro. But I know how to deal with that problem. I eat lots of onion sandwiches.

Is there something I'm missing? Well, people keep telling me I'm missing a few screws. But that's no problem. There are two decent hardware stores within walking distance of my house.

I don't have any more goals left. I've already reached them all and retired. 32 years in the rocket science business is enough distance for me. Especially with the distances some of our newest rockets can travel.

Does the universe contain infinite distances? Well, maybe it does, but if it does then you can't measure them. Measurement can only be done in numerical quantities, and infinity is not a number, therefore you can't measure an infinite distance. But that shouldn't be a problem. Everything you're ever going to need in your life is a finite distance away anyhow.

Now, I was going to change the background color of this page and go find a clip art graphic to stick at the top of the page, but I've decided it's too great a distance to scroll back up to the top of the file and change stuff. Besides, white is a nice enough background color. In fact, you can actually see for a greater distance when your pathway is illuminated with white light.
