Lights we have visited on Lake Huron

The following pictures will be of the Michigan lights on the Lake Huron coastline starting from Mackinaw City down to and including Port Huron.

Mackinaw City light - Old Mackinaw Point, with the Mackinaw Bridge opening in 1957, made this tower obsolete. Mackinaw City light is now a museum.

Forty Mile point light - Built in 1896, this lighthouse stands along the stretch of Lake Huron shoreline between Rogers City and Cheboygan. Forty Mile Point is open to the public, but the tower itself is not accessible.

Cheboygan Crib light marks the harbor entrance at Cheboygan, home port of Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw.

New Presque Isle - Built in 1871 to replace the old light one mile away, New Presque Isle boasts one of the highest towers on the Great Lakes, standing at 113 feet tall. New Presque Isle is open for tours from May to October and has a museum and gift shop.

Old Presque Isle light - The first lighthouse in Presque Isle area, Old Presque Isle light went into service in 1840 and served for 30 years. Tours are available during summer months. The tower of Old Presque Isle stands 58 feet tall and is said to be haunted by an old light keeper.

Sturgeon Point - Built in 1869, this light is located just north of Harrisville. Sturgeon Point is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard and the keepers quarters is now a museum and giftshop. It is 87 feet tall and can be seen for 15 miles. This shot of Sturgeon Point was taken with our video camera at sunset.

Tawas Point - (Ottawa Point) This lighthouse stands at the tip of the hook-shaped peninsula known as Tawas Point, along the Lake Huron shore.Tawas light was built in 1853, then rebuilt in 1876 due to shifting sands. Tawas stands 67 feet tall and now houses Coast Guard families. This shot of Tawas light was taken with our video camera on a day when the temperature was 30 below zero.

Port Austin breakwater light marks the entrance to the harbor

Point Aux Barques - Built in 1857, located at Lighthouse Park in Huron County, Point Aux Barques is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard, however the buildings are owned by Huron County. This light is still operational.

Harbor Beach light - Located on the north breakwater, the light marks the entrance to the harbor at Harbor Beach in Michigan's thumb region. We are not sure yet if the old building was the original lighthouse and then replaced by the breakwater light, but we believe so and call it the Old Harbor Beach lighthouse.

Port Sanilac - Commission October 20, 1886, the 59 foot tower is operated by the U.S. Coast Guard, but the dwelling is privately owned. Port Sanilac light was electrified in 1924 and flashes once each second for 3 secs., then dark for 3 secs. The range of the light is between 12-15 miles.

Fort Gratiot - This is Michigan's oldest surviving lighthouse. The conical brick structure was raised to it's present height in 1861. Originally built in 1829, it is located on the shore of the St. Clair River in Port Huron.
