The very first equine lived about 50 million years ago. It was called Hyracotheriumn. It has 4 toes on its front feet and 3 toes on its hind feet. It was formerly called Eohippus or "Dawn horse". By about 6 million years ago, Pliohippus, the first single hoofed horse, had evolved. The first truely modern horse, Equus caballus, evolved about one million years ago. There are three primitive kinds of horses. Together the Tarpan (eastern Europe), Equus silvaticus (northern Europe), and the Asiatic Wild Horse form the foundations for all modern horse and pony breeds in the world.
Equines are measured in hands, one hand is equal to 10cm or 4".
All equines have sensitive hearing. When they hear a sound coming from behind them, they simply rotate their ears around to hear better. Equines have whiskers on their muzzles. The whiskers help the animal to feel what they cannot see. A lot of owners trim the whiskers though.
