HOBBIES AND INTERESTS

I enjoy walking, backpacking, swimming, the cinema/theatre and reading. I have also studied in Yoga, Tai Chi, Chinese healing, astrology, computers and am interested in analytical psychology

Organisational Skills

Since the early 1980's I have developed organisational skills, first by taking senior positions in a local political organisation, then as an employee representative, local councillor, chairman of local council committees and most recently senior employee representative with particular responsibility for Employee Development Programs and new production systems.

I have transferred skills in problem solving, communication, decision making and planning between local government and industry.

People Skills

I have nearly twenty years experience in working within formal committee procedures, making presentations to large groups of people and negotiating/problem solving within organisations and with the general public. This has been balanced by experience in dealing with people on very much a one to one basis. I have developed skills as an enable in empowering people to be self motivated to resolve their own problems.

Media Skills

As a local councillor, I regularly issued press releases and later conducted interviews for local radio and television. These skills were later used through my work with the innovative Ford EDAP scheme.

Educational Development and Assistance Programs

I played a play a key roll in the innovative Ford and Trade Union EDAP scheme, being responsible for setting up one of the first Employee Development Programs in the UK. With a target population of over 4,000 people I was part of a small group that has gone on to employ full time education advisors and administrators. Working with Ruskin College Oxford, I have been a strong advocate of access, innovation, flexibility and choice in providing a learning experience.

So successful is this scheme, over 70% take up has been achieved amongst a population who generally have a low instance of adult learning. Other projects I have been involved in are the development of basic skills with NIACE and a learning together family education scheme.

As a local committee member and chairman I have been involved in national conferences and working parties on the creation of educational development programs including Funding Life Long Learning, a TUC / Ruskin College initiative and The Widening Participation Committee chaired by Helena Kennedy QC.

Modern Manufacturing Processes

I have also taken a leading roll in dealing with the practical and social changes due to the introduction of Japanese manufacturing processes. I have undertaken additional training, which included 'working in multi-cultural organisations' and 'collaborative decision making', in order to become more effective in a changing working environment.

This has been invaluable in enabling me to be effective in reducing conflict as these processes have been a great challenge to the traditional company organisation, effecting the rolls and responsibilities of people from senior managers to employees and contract staff.

Responsibility

I have been elected twice, giving eight years service to my community as a local councillor. During the late 1980''s and early 1990's, a challenging time for local government, I chaired two committees - Community Action which interfaced the local authority with community groups and the voluntary sector with a budget of £700,000 and Highways with a budget of £500,000.

As an elected employee representative I have negotiated at departmental and plant level representing between 200 and 3,000 people during a period of innovative change in manufacturing industry.

I have also taken an active roll as a School Governor and Trustee of a Friendly Society.

Personal Development

I have developed a strong sense of personal stability which has given me the confidence to successfully develop new areas of growth in my life.

In 1989 I developed an interest in eastern meditation, Tai Chi and Yoga - this was balanced witht western psychology through the works of Carl Jung. I later developed skills in accupresure, BuQi healing, massage, reflexology and developing my own system's for reducing the negative effects of electrical equipment and the so called 'sick building syndrome'.

Life Experience

As a site engineer I have worked across the UK, Holland and on oil platforms in the North Sea. Later with Ford Motor Company I have undertaken training on robotics in Germany and been involved in the globalisation process through meetings in the UK, Europe and North America.

Technology

Being self taught in using and programming the first home computers I took part in a national working group in using this technology in local organisations. I have continued to use computers / PC's upgrading from windows 3.1 to windows 95-8. I used an early version of computer communication 'Telecom Gold' in the 1980's and am at present using the internet, well trying!
