Exposure Do's and Don'ts

So you've created your homepage and you're anxious to let the whole world see it. One of the most frequently asked questions about homepages is "How do I get people to visit my page ?" Well the good news is there are several very effective ways to get the word out and actually encourage people to visit. The bad news is that there are also several ways to dissuade people from visiting your homepage.

DO'S

Word of mouth ... ask your Netfriends to visit your page.
IRC ... when asked, offer your URL or if an opportunity arises in that sending out your URL adds to the immediate conversation.
Quit Message ... include your URL in your quit message on IRC.
E-mail Signature ... include your URL in your email signature(s).
Webrings ... join a webring that "fits" your site's central theme.
Geocities ... make sure your website is in a neighborhood that suits your central theme and check out the Featured Pages and A-List sites to see how and why those pages got those priviledges.
Effort ... if you put time, thought and your own personal effort into your page, you will not only have visitors, but you will have repeat visitors and visits from those your visitors have told about your page as well.

DONT'S

A sure way to discourage people from visiting your page is by spamming ( unsolicited advertising ) your site.

E-Mail ... spamming via e-mail forces people to be aware of your URL through flooding (flaming) or mass e-mailing.
IRC ... joining an irc channel just to send out the URL or flooding a channel with your URL alias.
Geocities ... Mass e-mailing Community Leaders with requests to have your site Featured when you haven't read any of the Featured Page Guidelines first.

Although you may be convinced your site is the best thing since sliced bread, please be aware that not all will agree. The key to a highly successful homepage is a concentrated effort from you to be creative, original in content, and consistant in theme, style and structure. The rest will take care of itself. :)
