Themes

Your theme is the overall, dominant, idea behind your homepage. Deciding on the theme therefore, is vital to the success or failure of your project. You do not need a field of expertise to present to your audience, but you do need to convince your audience that your page is worth exploring and returning to again and again.

Organization

A homepage is much like a book with all of it's elements. You therefore must include all of those sections when planning your homepage. You must have a title, an introduction, a well organized body of chapters and a conclusion. Your graphics (images) must also "FIT" the overall theme of your homepage. In short, be consistant.

Navigation

Navigating your homepage is also very important. Make it easy for your visitors to flip back and forth among your pages. Like a book, if a reader comes across a section that requires him/her to return to a previous section for clarification, then the reader will not want to be obliged to go to the back button on the browser. A simple navigation bar or ismap on each page will be most appreciated. Hotlinks within your text are helpful but can confuse or lose your readers. Be very careful and selective with hotlinks.

Time

Time is also an important factor. Ask yourself if you have the hours required to construct and maintain a website. The last thing a person wants to see when visiting your homepage is an "Under Construction" sign with little or no content present. If your page is already established, make sure you do not start a reconstruction unless you have adequate time to finish it.
