Prime investigator in the project on FODA (Feature-Oriented Domain Analysis), a methodology from Carnegie Mellon's Software Engineering Institute. The main accomplishments of this 2-year effort were

• Development of an expert system (using SmartElements) for domain analysts.
• FODA customization and application within Nortel.
• Development of a 2-day comprehensive course in FODA
• FODA training of interested groups within Nortel.
• Publication of a guidebook for FODA pragmatists

Known as ITSAP in its current form, the methodology aims to systematically align three critical perspectives of an organization - Business, Information flow, and Technologggy. While the methodology does not require the use of any expensive CASE or ERP tool, it can be easily adapted to any of the known assessment tools.

- Applied ITSAP for strategic assessment of NCR's Financial Enterprise Architecture, including IT requirements for their worldwide banking customers.

Project Leader, Knowledge-Based Systems

Directed the development and dispersion of knowledge-based systems and other Artificial Intelligence (AI) or related technologies for use within Becton Dickinson (BD) or to add value to its products. (BD is a $3+ billion global medical technology company).

• Five embedded knowledge-based systems on the market adding value to BD's diagnostic instruments. One of these, in hematology, enhanced its division's revenues by at least $4 million in its first year. Its newest version, spurred by customer demand is expected to continue this revenue growth and open up new markets.
• Designed and implemented a strategy for dispersing within BD the capability to develop knowledge-based systems, resulting in increased awareness of this technology, training for around 50 employees, and development start of more than 15 applications.

Architectural definition, system design and performance analysis of new generation computers.

• Developed a spreadsheet-based software tool for evaluating the fault tolerance of large electronic systems, simplifying such evaluations for Sperry's managers and engineers, and resulting in more robust estimates and designs.
• Contributed to a corporate-level technical committee on expert systems and AI, whose recommendations led to the formation of a core AI group at Sperry.
• Developed an expert system for the field diagnosis of Sperry's 1100/90 mainframe, resulting in increased effectiveness of field service engineers.
• Led a pioneering effort for resolving testability issues in the 1100/90 follow-on system early in its development cycle, resulting in a more testable and robust design with savings in the actual test phase.
