This page will be used primarily during inductions in order to save time typing out URLs (Uniform Resource Locators). It has been written and saved as an HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) document. Saving this document to disk and opening it on your home computer should have the same effect if you cannot connect to the Internet at home for some reason. Your browser software will still be able to read the page. Save each page of interest for reference later. From time to time, this page may get updated.

From time to time, some pages will not load. This is either because there is a temporary fault with the page’s site or the university proxy server has barred access to it. However, trying it again later if there is an error, or from home or elsewhere if it is not deemed as a valid site might yield success.

You will notice a complete lack of any graphics on this page. This is intentional for a number of reasons. Firstly, the page is quicker to load if there are no graphics, secondly, it is for information only and last but by no means least, my time, like everyone else’s, is severely limited. Graphics also consume a lot of space on the computer that hosts the web site. This is fine if you want a few pictures, but the amount of written content is then limited accordingly. A sneakier way is to have links to sites that hold the graphics, but it cannot always be guaranteed that they will stay there. Unless, of course, you have many free Internet accounts and / or web pages on which to strategically distribute your files.

The continued existence of any sites linked on this, or other pages in this site, are not my responsibility, and I rarely, if ever, check them. Some sites, e.g., Yahoo! and Geocities, may merge, but their respective URLs should still get you there. If you come across a link that is no longer current, then feel free to email me. In addition, any other comments or suggestions can be directed to:

Most URLs are proceeded by http:// which stands for Hyper Text Transport Protocol. It is ONE of the ways that information is accessed on the Internet, there are others, but most people use this one. Generally, you don’t need to type this in full, just the Internet address, i.e., www.bournemouth.ac.uk instead of http://www.bournemouth.ac.uk. (Sometimes, it is also possible to omit the initial www. At the beginning of addresses, i.e., bournemouth.ac.uk).

Also, if it is a DOT COM internet address, such as:
http://www.thegreatillusion.com
then in most cases, you can usually just type the domain name, in this case:
thegreatillusion
into the address bar of your browser and then simply just hold down the CTRL and ENTER keys together.
It will then be surrounded (or filled in) by the http://www. and .com

Try it with the above, or any other web address of your own choosing and see for yourselves.

When trying to find information with the Internet, many people use what are known as Search Engines.

Jobs On the Internet:

Second and final year students will find the Internet very useful for finding jobs and / or placements. One company allows you to create and edit an on-line C.V. with it’s own URL that you can then add to your paper based CV so that potential employers can see it. They also regularly review these CVs. For more information, go to: taps.com. Additionally, I have compiled a list of web sites of many of the major employment agencies. Click Here to see the list.
