Background
The section started on 1st January 1987 as the Standards Division in Jabatan Telekomunikasi Malaysia (JTM). It comprised of three officers and handled only technical compliance approval and was based at Wisma Damansara, Kuala Lumpur.
On 24th June, 1996, the Division moved to a bigger site at Jalan Cochrane. This was inevitable since the number of applications for technical compliance has increased 5 times. The Division was renamed as Equipment and Importation Unit. The unit had nine officers and handle technical compliance and import permit approval.
Following the enactment of the new Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, JTM ceased to function from 1st April, 1999. Under the new Act, the Communications and Multimedia Commission (CMC) is the independent body charged with regulating the telecommunications, broadcasting and computing industries. Subsequently, SIRIM Berhad was appointed by CMC to be the certifying agent for telecommunications equipment with effect from 1st April, 1999. With this appointment, SIRIM Berhad took over all the activities relating to type approval for telecommunication equipment from JTM. All the staffs from the Equipment and Importation Unit of JTM were absorbed into SIRIM Berhad. A new section was created in the Testing Services Department of SIRIM Berhad for this purpose. This new section is named Communication Equipment Testing Section (CETS). 2 new staffs were added to the CETS, making the total number of staffs in the section to 11.
New Appointment
On the 12th April, 1999, SIRIM Berhad was appointed by the Customs Department as the approving body for the importation of telecommunication products. This include the appointment of 3 officers from CETS and 2 officers each from SIRIM Berhad Kuching and SIRIM Berhad Kota Kinabalu branch offices.
On the 20th April, 1999, 5 more officers were appointed as Assistant Directors by the Customs Department. This would allow the processing of import permit to be carried out in our Branch offices at Johor Bahru (southern region) and Permatang Pauh (northern region). The launching of import permit services at all these locations will be announced later.
