ABOUT THE NEW DESIGNERS
In this 1999 line we see some new names credited for several of the designs. This is because there has been five new designers added to the brilliant team headed by veteran designers Tim Kennedy and Doug James.
José Ferrand - a native of Lima, Peru. He has designed on New York's famous 7th Avenue for a number of years. He is known for his fabulous evening suits. His designs for the 1999 collection include "Love, Paris", "Avant Garde", "Cognac Evening" and "Honeymoon".
Vince Nowell - Born in New Orleans, he moved to California as a design student. His 1999 Gene designs include "Poolside", "Bridge Club".
Christine D. Curtis - A designer and illustrator by trade. Her fashions and art started appearing on Vogue pattern covers in the late '40s. The Gene team was so impressed with her work that she was asked to design for Gene. We will see her work in the future.
Lynne Day - Not only designs for a vinyl star-she creates costumes for some of the most famous stars on today's Hollywood scene. Her work has graced such popular artists as Julia Roberts, Kim Bassinger and Angelica Houston. Lynne is also an avid doll lover and collector. Her 1999 Gene designs include "Picnic in the Country", "Tea Time at the Plaza", and "On the Veranda".
Dolly Cipolla - has done freelance work for The Ashton-Drake Galleries for many years. She is now an official member of the design team. She holds a fashion degree from the International Academy of Merchandise and Design, Ltd. Her clothing designs can be seen from fashion uniforms - to one-of-a-kind creations for special clients. Dolly's 1999 Gene designs include "Stand Up and Cheer" and "Press conference".
A few words about the veterans
Tim Kennedy - has designed for many years and for many clients in his private design business. Known as one of the best "drapers" in fashion, his work is constantly in demand-especially by Gene fans. Among other creations for the 1999 collection, Tim designed the 1999 Annual Gene Doll, "Song of Spain" and "She'd Rather Dance".
Doug James - currently does wardrobe for NBC's Saturday Night Live and is one of the official milliners for the Muppet films, among many other accomplishments. His designs have been favorites of Gene fans for years-and this year has designed the much-asked-for "USO".
