After Harold leaves, lane 6 starts to malfunction. Pintero tries to reset the pins but the pinsetter is still malfunctioning. When a ball is returned, it has blood on it. Angie walks down the lane and checks the pinsetting equipment. On top of the machine is a dying woman mouthing some words to Pintero.
Before Angie can call 911, the police appear at his door. A young woman -- the same young woman Angie saw on top of the machine, is dead in the alley behind the bowling alley. Her throat has been cut.
The credits roll: The Truth is Out There.
The next morning, Mulder and Scully put on bowling shoes and examine lane 6. Angie recaps the previous night's events to an interested Mulder and a skeptical Scully. Mulder tells Scully the pinsetting machine is broken, as if a something sat on it. Mulder also notices a problem with the lane floor.
Pintero defends what he saw, commenting that the look on Scully's face tells him she does not believe. Mulder defuses the situation, asking for a soda. As Pintero leaves to get Mulder the coke, Mulder teases Scully about her skeptical look when she doesn't believe a story. Scully teases right back, telling Mulder he should know that look after four years.
Mulder tells Scully he thinks Pintero saw a disembodied soul. There were two other murders in the last two weeks, both with a person having a vision before the body is found. Mulder bowls a frame, getting a strike and impressing Scully. Mulder then tells Scully that the other people who saw the visions also thought the visions were trying to talk to them. Scully wants to know what the visions were saying. Mulder thinks he can show them with the soda, spilling it on the lane. The words "She is Me" appears in the wax.
Later that day, the DC police review the case. A Detective Hudak talks about the FBI profile of the killer but catches Mulder whispering to Scully in back of the presentation. When Mulder is scolded by the detective for causing trouble at the presentation, Mulder introduces himself and suggests that the profile is wrong. Mulder thinks that since the "She is Me" avenue hasn't been incorporated into the profile, its flawed. Hudak tries to blow Mulder off but admits that someone, not the victim, called in "She is Me" to 911 after the second murder. Mulder and Scully agree to follow that up.
The call came from a ward at the New Horizons Psychiatric Center. Mulder and Scully do a group interview of patients. One of the patients is Harold from the bowling alley. The interview is monitored by Mr. Alpert, the center's director, and Nurse Innes.
Mulder asks the group if anyone used the phone to call in the murder. A patient named Chuck admits to making the call but under Mr. Alpert's guidance, reveals he lied. No one else admits using the phone. Harold sits and rocks in the corner.
Mulder shows a picture of one of the victims to the group. All of them know her except Harold, who is rocking faster. Scully is skeptical, so she picks up a TV Guide with Jay Leno on the cover. All of the patients, except for Harold, say that Leno is the killer. Scully leaves an embarrassed Mulder with the patients and Mr. Alpert.
Mulder, who was watching Harold throughout the group interview, asks Mr. Alpert to see Harold. Nurse Innes brings Harold to an examining room while the rest of the patients return to a recreation room. As Mulder walks past Scully in the hallway, she points out something the crime team missed in the photos. The victims all wore rings, but according to suntan lines and indentations in the victims fingers, the rings were taken from one finger and moved to another. Mulder congratulates Scully on catching this.
Scully thinks the killer is suffering from an obsessive- compulsive disorder called ego-dystonia. Ego-dystonia causes sufferers to reorganize things, but it is not a murderous impulse. Mulder thinks it could turn into a murderous impulse when mixed with Harold's mental illness.
Mulder interviews Harold who is agitated and frightened. When Mulder asks if he saw a ghost, Harold freaks. Mulder and Scully leave the room while Nurse Innes tries to calm Harold. Harold starts calling out numbers, 18, 37 45.
Scully reviews Harold's records. He suffers from a Persuasive Developmental Disorder or Atypical Autism. He has been in and out of institutions his whole life He also suffers from ego-dystonia, making Scully believe he is the killer. Mulder has his doubts.
Scully shows Mulder Harold's records, including a note that he works for Angie's Midnight Bowl. As Scully points to the notes, blood drops on the paper. "Oh Scully", a pained Mulder says. She, however, tells Mulder she's fine and races off to the ladies room.
As Scully cleans up in a divided ladies room -- the sinks are on one side of the wall, the stalls on the other -- she looks at the mirror. The words "She is Me" are written in blood on the mirror. Scully hears a moan from the toilet side of the wall. As she walks over, there is a ghost with her throat cut trying to talk to Scully. Scully is shaken and amazed.
Mulder knocks on the ladies room door, causing Scully to look away. When she looks back to the place where the ghost stood, it has disappeared as has the blood in the mirror. Mulder opens the ladies room door to tell Scully that there has been another killing. A dead girl one block from the hospital.
At the crime scene, Scully looks at the dead body. It is the young woman from the ladies room. Mulder points out that the victim's ring was switched. Scully thinks this eliminates Harold as a suspect, but Mulder tells her Harold escaped from the Clinic. Mulder wants the two of them to find Harold before the cops do, at least to find out what "She is Me" means. Scully opts out, telling Mulder she'd like to go to the doctor. Mulder offers to drive her but she tells him she's fine, this is just a precaution.
Harold, meanwhile, is someplace dark, gluing a bowling score sheet to a wall. "She is Me" shows up on one of the many score sheets hanging on the wall. Harold then sees the ghosts of the dead girls over his shoulder.
Scully has some blood taken at a hospital. She seems upset. Her next stop is to the Employee Assistant Program Counselor Karen Kossoff. Kossoff is the woman Scully spoke with during Irresistible when she was sickened by Donnie Pfaster's crimes. Kossoff brings up the Pfaster case, telling Scully that she has, in the past, been able to discuss her fears with others, with Mulder. Scully explains that things are different -- that now she has cancer. Kossoff is very concerned, but Scully assures Kossoff that her health is fine.
KK: You've kept working.
DS: Yes. Its been important to me.
KK: Why?
DS: Why (a bit startled by the question), um, Agent Mulder has been...concerned. He's been supportive through this time and..
KK: Do you feel that you owe it to him to continue working?
DS: No. (Scully 's eyes begin to fill with tears but she does not cry) I guess I never realized how much I relied on him before this, his passion. He's been a great source of strength that I've drawn on.
Kossoff asks Scully what happened. She tell Kossoff that she saw the dead girl and the girl was trying to speak to her. Scully admits she doesn't trust what she saw. She wonders if she saw the dead girl because it has been suggested to her or if the suggestion is a growth of her fear. Kossoff wonders if Scully's real fear is of failing Mulder. Scully thinks that might be possible. When Kossoff asks if Scully knows what the dead girl tried to tell her, Scully said no, but isn't sure.
Mulder goes alone to the bowling alley to try to find Harold or any of his possessions. Mulder finds Harold hiding in lane 6. Mulder chases Harold through the internal works of the bowling alley, only to find him in a corner mumbling "She is Me".
Harold and his lawyer are questioned by Detective Hudak and Mulder. Hudak thinks Harold is the killer, Mulder remains unconvinced. The lawyer tries to protect Harold -- who is chanting numbers. Mulder asks if Harold knew the women. When he mentions Penny Timmons, Harold answers 8, 17, 30, 37, 45, 53, 71, 80, 92, 99 and 108. When Mulder says Risa Shapiro, Harold answers 14, 29, 38, 57, 71, 79, 88, 101, 117. Mulder names the other victims and Harold has a string of numbers for them as well. Mulder finally asks one of the victims shoe size and Harold knows that too. Hudak thinks Harold is a stalker and killer while Mulder now thinks he is innocent.
Mulder takes Hudak, Harold and his lawyer to the bowling alley basement. They find every score sheet from the bowling alley for the last seven years. Harold saved them. He can repeat every score for everyone who ever played -- a part of his autism. Harold has another vision -- this time it is Angie Pintero. As Mulder and company follow Harold out of the basement, Pintero is dead on the bowling alley floor. He had a massive heart attack.
Later that night, Scully sits worrying in her bathrobe when Mulder stops by her apartment. He apologizes for the late night visit but follows by asking for her medical expertise. He quickly backtracks to check on her health. She tells him she's fine. Mulder tells Scully that Angie Pintero is dead and Harold had a vision about it. Mulder thinks that Harold had a connection to the victims, one his autism prevents him from acting on or explaining.
Scully, while not disagreeing about Harold's visions, wonders about the other people who had visions, without telling him that she had a vision. Mulder found a common link in all of those people -- they are all dying. One person has emphysema, one has cancer and Angie, obviously, had heart disease.
Freaked, but not telling Mulder anything, Scully asks if Harold is dying. Mulder explains that the reason he was at Scully's so late was to ask her if she would give Harold a check up -- see if he is dying. Scully doesn't think that he is, but Mulder is positive Harold is dying. It makes sense to him. Who better to see a death omen but the dying themselves, he asks her. Scully agrees to the checkup, promising to meet him at the Clinic..
In the examining room, Mr. Alpert is having a hard time getting Harold to take his medicine. Nurse Innes asks if she can help, and Mr. Alpert agrees, going to find Mulder. Once he is gone, she starts to taunt Harold. She calls his medicine poison. She teases him about having photos of the dead girls. She calls him names like "toad" and "retard".
Mulder meets with Mr. Alpert but hears a scream from the examining room. Mulder, an arriving Scully, Mr. Alpert and the other patients race to the examining room. Nurse Innes is on the floor, bleeding from a head wound. Harold, according to Nurse Innes, became violent and escaped. Innes asks to be alone for a few minutes to pull herself together. Mr. Alpert encourages the other patients to go back to bed while Mulder and Scully split up. He is looking for Harold, she wants to talk to his roommate Chuck. In the examining room, Nurse Innes pulls scalpel out of her sweater pocket.
Chuck tells Scully that Harold thought that he was being poisoned by Nurse Innes. Innes told Harold she was poisoning his meds, so he stopped taking them. Chuck also shows Scully pictures that Harold had of the victims. Harold liked the girls, but was harmless. Nurse Innes knew about these women and taunted him about them.
Scully begins to suspect Nurse Innes. When Scully runs into her in the ladies room, she asks Innes if she's OK. Innes says she's OK, but will be better when she gets home. Scully asks if she has a family, a husband, children? Innes bitterly admits that her husband ran off with a younger woman several years ago. Scully notices that Innes's wedding ring is gone. Innes, at about the same time, drops all sorts of pills on the floor.
Scully tries to arrest Innes, but Innes attacks her with the scalpel. The two fight, with Scully suffering some minor wounds on her hands. When Scully pulls her gun on Innes, the woman would not stop the assault. Scully fires.
Mulder is in the hall looking for Harold when the gunshot sounds. He races to the ladies room. Scully is standing over a wounded Innes. Scully shot her in the shoulder. As Mulder goes to pick up her scalpel, Scully stops him -- she thinks Innes is the killer and the scalpel is evidence.
Later, as Innes is being removed from the hospital by ambulance, Scully tells Mulder that Innes was taking Harold's meds. The meds made her unstable, likely to cause violence. She thinks that the women were killed by Innes in an attempt to kill Harold's happiness, a happiness she never thought she'd have after her husband left.
Mulder tells Scully that Harold is dead -- he died of respiratory failure in a park near the Clinic. Scully starts telling Mulder that Harold visions weren't from the fact that he was dying, he was killed by Innes stealing his meds. When Mulder asks if that was her medical opinion, Scully begins to open up to Mulder:
S: I saw something
M: What?
S: The 4th victim. I saw her in the bathroom before you came to tell me.
M: (a mixture of surprise, anger and hurt) Why didn't you tell me?
S: Because I didn't believe it, because I don't want to believe it.
M: Is that why you came down here, to prove it wasn't true? (angrier now, but not yelling)
S: No, I came down here because you asked me too. (Scully begins to become upset)
M: Why can't you be honest with me?
S: What do you want me to say? That you're right, that I believe even if I don't. Is that what you want?
M: Is that what you think I want to hear?
S: No.
M: You can believe what you want to believe Scully, but you can't hide the truth from because if you do, you are working against me and yourself. I know what you are afraid of, I'm afraid of the same thing.
S: The doctor said I was fine.
M: I hope that's the truth.
S: (barely audible) I'm going home.
Scully walks away from an upset Mulder. As she gets into her car, Scully breaks down and finally cries. As she sees Innes's ambulance drive off, she spies Harold in her rear view mirror. Startled, she turns to look at him, but he's not there. Scully tries to pull herself together.
