In Vancouver, a Russian Chess Master in his late 30's is playing a 12 year old boy name Gibson Praise. The two are playing in a sports arena in front of a crowd of 15,000.

As Gibson and the Russian play, an assassin sets up a long distance rifle. Gibson seems aware of this, looking around the stadium, but says nothing.

As the shooter puts young Gibson in the line of fire, the boy makes his chess mate move. The assassin fires as Gibson pushes away from the table. The Russian is shot in the heart and dies on the spot.

The crowd erupts in fear, racing to the exits.

The Credits Roll: "The End" replaces "The Truth is Out There".

Early one morning in the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec, two masked men parachute into a remote wooded area. They are nearing the cabin where the Cigarette Smoking Man (CSM) has been hiding and healing. One masked man trips a sensor as he gets closer to the cabin, warning CSM.

One man is shot as he tries to enter the cabin. CSM flees on foot as the other masked man follows.

The masked man catches up to CSM. He removes his mask -- it is Krycek. CSM thinks Krycek is there to kill him, but he is not. "I was sent to bring you back", Alex tells CSM.

At the same time, Skinner is waiting for Mulder ins Mulder's office. He is looking at Mulder's poster -- where someone has placed a POST-IT note that says "You Are Here" on the flying saucer -- as well as a bulletin board with newspaper articles about Tooms and Duane Barry, a photo of Mulder and Scully working on a case and another of the 731. As Skinner flips through an old X File case, Mulder walks in.

"You know you're going places in the Bureau when the Assistant Director tidies up your office for you", Mulder is clearly not upset, almost joking with Skinner.

Skinner watches as Mulder takes the file from Skinner's hands. The A.D. asks about Mulder's "long term plans".

Mulder tells him the X Files are his long term plans.

"What do you hope to find, in the end", Skinner asks.

"Whatever I hope to find", Mulder tells Skinner as he places the file back in a drawer, "is in here. And maybe I'll know it when I find it". Mulder wants to know the real reason Skinner is there.

Skinner explains that he has an assignment for Mulder outside the X Files, the killing of the Russian Chess Master. The shooter was caught, Skinner explains and he was a National Security Agency operative. "This kid, Jeffrey Spender", Skinner tells Mulder, was assigned the lead role in the case.

Mulder asks if Skinner gave Spender the assignment. Skinner tells Mulder that the appointment came from outside the bureau. When Spender put together his team, he specifically asked that Mulder be excluded.

Mulder shares a conspiratorially smile with Skinner, knowing what he is being asked to do.

Spender is running his briefing with about 20 agents, including Scully. Mulder barges right in with the Assistant Director right behind him. Spender stops as Mulder stands in the back, but Mulder asks Spender to continue.

As Spender reruns the video of the shooting, pushing the theory the Russian was the target. Mulder notices something. Mulder asks Spender to rerun the video.

Annoyed, Spender announces that he will finish the briefing and deal with questions afterward.

"I don't have any questions", Mulder tells Spender and the room full of agents, "No, I just think you're wrong." Mulder isn't rude in his presentation, but is obviously undercutting Spender's authority.

Scully calls him on this, "Mulder, what are you doing?".

Mulder announces to the room that he does not believe the Russian was the target, Gibson was.

The agents in the room are becoming more and more uncomfortable as Mulder pushes as obstinate Spender to rerun the tape. Spender reluctantly does. When the tape is rewound, Mulder tries to point out where he thought Gibson knew he was the target and moved. If Gibson did not move in the last minute, he would have been shot in the back of the neck.

An agent in the last row of the briefing room agrees with Mulder. She is Diana Fowley and Mulder seems genuinely surprised to see her.

Spender looks to the Assistant Director for some help regaining control of the meeting. Skinner tells Spender to rewind the tape again. On a third viewing, it is obvious that Mulder is right.

CSM, escorted by Krycek, meets up with the Consortium elders, including the Well Manicured Man, the First Elder (the Well Fed Man), and several Americans. All are surprised CSM is alive.

The group wants CSM back -- Gibson Praise has created problems for them, problems only CSM can fix. CSM agrees to work with them.

Scully, Mulder and Fowley ride to visit Gibson. Mulder is driving, Scully is in the front seat, Fowley in the back sitting behind Mulder.

Scully asks Fowley about herself. Fowley has been with the Bureau since 1991, stationed in Europe after the Wall came down. She has been working foreign terrorism.

Scully asks if Fowley was brought on the case because of her terrorism background, but Fowley states she is back in America for good. There are "things at home I wanted to get back to." she looks right at Mulder in the rearview mirror.

Scully realizes that 1991 was the year Mulder started the X Files. Mulder is uncharacteristically quiet.

The three arrive at the Inget-Murray Psychiatric Facility in Gaithersburg, MD. Gibson is in a private room, watching The Simpsons on TV. Mulder introduces himself as "Fox" to the young boy and Scully and Fowley as Dana and Diana.

Gibson is not upset about his detention, enjoying the TV he can watch. "Where I live", Gibson tells Mulder, "in the Philippines, all we get is Baywatch."

"What's wrong with Baywatch?", Mulder asks, smiling.

"You've got a dirty mind", he tells Mulder.

Smiling, Scully tells Gibson that his parents are on the way.

Gibson tells Mulder that he does not want to play with a computer chess game Mulder has brought. Mulder asks Gibson if he does not want to play the chess computer because he can't beat it. Mulder asks Gibson if he can read minds.

Gibson shows Mulder that he can read Mulder's mind. Gibson tells Mulder he is thinking of "one of the girls you brought. And one of them is thinking of you."

Mulder asks who, but Gibson keeps quiet. Mulder thinks Gibson is a mind reader and wants 24 hour protection for the child.

Mulder leaves with Scully right behind him. Diana stays behind with Gibson.

Mulder tells Scully he thinks Gibson is not a chess master but a mind reader. He has the ultimate advantage in chess.

"Mulder," Scully rebuts, "he was goofing on you. He was playing along."

Mulder brings up previous cases where they've seen mind readers before but Scully is skeptical, "No one has been able to stand up to any testing and no one has gone so far as to claim they are zeroing in on the mind of one person in a crowd of thousands."

Diana is watching the disagreement between Mulder and Scully.

Mulder theorizes that Gibson was a target because he could mind read. Scully can't see the logic in killing Gibson, who if Mulder is right, gives someone the ultimate advantage in "business, in war, in anything."

Fowley interrupts, thinking Gibson would be a target if the folks behind the shooting wanted to keep secrets. Mulder asks Fowley to conduct tests on Gibson -- "You know what to do" -- as he walks away.

"So, you two know each other", Scully asks Fowley when they are alone.

"It was a long time ago,", Fowley replies.

At a Federal Prison in Ft. Marlene, Spender is leaving the shooter's cell after 6 hours of interrogation. Mulder wants to talk to the shooter, but Spender refuses to let Mulder in the cell. "I prefer you stay out of there", Spender tells Mulder, "In fact, I prefer you stay out of this whole thing all together."

"When I first met you", Mulder tells Spender, "I figured you were just ambitious and this morning my opinion changed and I thought you were arrogant. Now I beginning to wonder what you are protecting."

"I'm just trying to run this thing right, not like some ridiculous paranormal free-for-all."

"You're insulting me when you should be talking notes," an annoyed Mulder tells Spender, "Somehow you got the big assignment but just because you are wearing the suit doesn't mean it fits. You're lucky you're not busy defusing some international incident, kissing some serious Russian ass and sending a whole lot of agents barking down a whole lot of bad leads." Mulder makes a move for the cell door, "Now the kid is the key to this and the shooter knows why."

Mulder barges into the cell with Spender behind him. The shooter complains to Mulder that Spender has denied him food or water for the last 16 hours. Mulder cuts down Spender infront of the shooter for this, ordering him to get the shooter some lunch. Spender reluctantly leaves.

Mulder tells the shooter that he knows Gibson reads minds. Mulder wonders what would happen to the shooter if Mulder tells the world that the shooter gave him that information. The shooter is willing to deal with Mulder if he can get immunity, but knows believes Mulder will not be able to do that.

Mulder leaves as Spender and a Guard are bringing lunch to the shooter. Mulder grabs a bag of chips from the tray as he leaves the jail. Spender asks what Mulder got from the shooter. "His attention" is Mulder's reply.

Scully brings Gibson back from an MRI. He tells Scully that she is "wondering about that other girl". Agent Fowley comes into view. "She's wondering about you too.", Gibson tells Scully. Gibson is given some psychic tests. He passes with flying colors, even telling several testers what they had for breakfast. Scully and Fowley are amazed, watching through a two way mirror. Fowley reminisces about some cases of mind reading she and Mulder studied earlier in their careers. Scully excuses herself.

In jail, a guard gives the shooter a note. The note "You're a dead man" is written on inside of a pack of Morley cigarettes.

Scully makes a late night visit to the Lone Gunmen. Gunmen sleepwear includes Frohike in Ally McBeal style pajamas with a bulletproof vest and his fingerless gloves. Langly seems to sleep in his regular clothes while Byers wears typical men's pajamas and a robe. Scully wants some help from the boys reading Gibson's brain scans, "with an eye to the parapsychological".

Frohike: "Oh, a walk on the wild side."

Scully: "First I want you guys to tell me who Diana Fowley is."

Byers: "Geez, we haven't heard that name in a while."

Scully: "Then you know her."

Byers: "Well, yeah."

Frohike: "She was Mulder's chickadee when he just got out of the Academy. Good looking."

Scully: "Well, she claims to have worked closely with him for a while."

Langly: "She was there when he discovered the X Files. She has some kind of background in the parasciences."

Byers: "She got a LEG-ATT appointment a while back, in Berlin. I always wondered why they split up."

Byers realizes he said too much when he sees Scully's negative reaction. She asks the Gunmen to research Gibson's brain scans.

Mulder meets with Fowley in the two way room while Gibson watches the Silver Surfer on TV next door. "How's little Carnac?", he asks.

"Put a TV infront of him and he turns right into a normal kid.", Fowley tells Mulder, "He's the real deal, Fox." Fowley reviews the tests Gibson took and his success with them.

Mulder thinks there is more they are missing.

Fowley compliments Mulder on figuring out that Gibson was the target, "You seem at the top of your game."

"Its all I do", Mulder tells her, "Its been my life, such as it is."

"Sometimes I hear about you, about the work you are doing. I think how it might have been if I stayed."

"We all would have been blown up by some terrorist bomb, no doubt", Mulder kids.

Fowley, however, is serious, "I sensed you could have used an ally though. Someone who thinks like you, with some background."

Mulder realizes where Fowley is going with this "Oh, you mean Scully."

"She's not what I would call an open mind on the subject", Fowley states somewhat dismissively.

Mulder smiles, "She's, a...ah, she's a scientist. She just makes me work for everything."

"Yes, but I'm sure there were times when two like minds on a case could have been advantageous."

Mulder is clearly not happy with where the conversation is going, "I've done OK without you."

"Hey,", Fowley grabs Mulder's hand, "I'm on your side."

Carrying Gibson's test results, Scully sees the handhold through a glass window on the door. She is clearly bothered by it and walks away. Taking refuge in her car, she calls Mulder and asks him to meet her at the Hoover building. Mulder invites her to the hospital, not knowing she is there in the parking lot, but Scully asks him to come to the basement. She wants to show him something.

Mulder agrees to meet her.

As Scully is pulling out of the parking lot, Spender is arriving. Spender is approached by CSM. CSM compliments Spender on being smart and brave. CSM also tells the young agent that he got Spender this case. Spender is interested in who CSM is -- CIA or NSA?

CSM won't answer, just telling Spender to control the investigation. He warns Spender not to let one man's crusade or obsession take over the case. Mulder arrives in the parking lot at this time. Seeing CSM with Spender, he runs after the older man, but CSM gets away.

Mulder pushes Spender on who he was talking to, but Spender honestly doesn't know. Mulder tells Spender that he thought CSM was dead. He also becomes more mistrusting of Spender.

At a briefing in Skinner's office with Spender's team -- including Spender and Fowley -- Scully explains Gibson's medical results. Gibson uses part of his brain, "the God module", that no one has ever used before. This would explain his special talents.

Mulder sees the boy as the key to all human potential, he is the key to everything in the X Files. Spender dismisses this idea. It is not about the X Files. Mulder agrees with Spender, Gibson's gifts are bigger than the X Files. He pushes for immunity for the shooter. The shooter knows about Gibson and Mulder wants to know what the shooter knows.

Spender does not agree with immunity for the shooter, a murder, "for the secrets of the pyramids."

Scully is offended by Spender's generalization. She says the boy is "quantifiable, scientific proof of everything that Agent Mulder and I have investigated over the last five years."

"How do you quantify the spiritual?", Fowley demands, "Can't be done." Cutting Scully down in front of all, Fowley dismisses the X Files investigations as an "indulgence" and unwanted attention to the X Files will cause them to be shut down.

Scully looks to Mulder who still supports Scully's theories. Skinner dismisses everyone except Mulder.

Skinner admits he shares Fowley's concerns about the X Files' future if Mulder pushes for immunity. Mulder agrees with Scully -- he wants an appointment with the Attorney General.

With Spender, Mulder meets with the shooter. Mulder needs for from the shooter before the Attorney General will agree to immunity. The shooter tells Mulder that Gibson is "the missing link".

Mulder realizes that Gibson is "genetic proof". Mulder leaves, realizing what the shooter knows. Spender follows, questioning Mulder. He explains to Spender that we all have DNA we don't use. Mulder believes that it comes from prehistoric alien astronauts.

Spender dismisses Mulder's theory.

CSM meets with the Well Manicured Man and WMM's chauffeur, Krycek. WMM is furious that Mulder has told the Attorney General about Gibson. CSM tells WMM it is all a part of his plan.

That night, Scully is guarding Gibson in a Maryland hotel. She asks how he reads minds.

"I just hear you thinking like on a radio". Gibson tells Scully. As she presses Gibson, he tells Scully "You don't care what people think, except for her, the other one.", at that point Diana enters the room.

Scully tells Gibson they will talk later. Gibson tells Scully that "they want to kill me", but Scully promises she won't let that happen.

The guard hands the shooter another message on a pack of Morley's. This time, there is no text. The guard, instead, executes the shooter.

Diana wakes from a catnap to find Gibson standing at a window. He tells her a man with a gun outside the window. She pushes him away from the window. Gibson warns her that the man with he gun doesn't want to kill him, but wants to kill her. At that moment, Diana is shot through the window.

The next morning, Mulder and Scully arrive at the motel. A U.S. Marshall was killed outside Gibson's room, Fowley was near death and Gibson was gone. Skinner shows Mulder the blank note on the Morley's from the shooter's cell. Mulder is furious when Skinner tells him Spender is working at the prison, the shooter is dead.

Well Manicured Man takes custody of Gibson from CSM. WMM tells Gibson he will not hurt him. Gibson tells WMM that he is a liar. CSM leaves, telling WMM he has more work to do. Krycek offers to kill CSM for WMM, but WMM thinks they will need CSM down the road.

Infront of a group of agents, Mulder goes after Spender in the FBI hallway. Mulder thinks Spender was working with CSM and promises he'll be charged with murder. "Your days are numbered", Mulder warns. Spender thinks they same of Mulder's days.

At Mulder's, Scully, in her causal clothes, is talking to Skinner on the phone. Mulder is dozing on his couch. When Scully finishes with Skinner -- including hearing that Spender is pressing charges against Mulder -- Mulder, with his eyes still closed, asks how Fowley is doing.

Scully replies that Fowley is on life support, but it doesn't look good. Scully tells him that the Justice Department wants to shut down the X Files and reassign them. Mulder realizes that this was a set up from the start. Scully agrees, thinking "this time they may have won."

In Mulder's office, CSM lights a cigarette and removes Samantha's file from one of Mulder's drawers. As CSM is leaving the Hoover building, he runs into Spender.

CSM promises Spender access. Spender wants to know who CSM is. "I'm your father", is CSM's reply. Before Spender can follow up on this, fire alarms go off.

Mulder's office is ablaze.

Mulder and Scully, still in their casual clothes, arrive at the Hoover building. Breezing past Skinner, they get to the basement just as the firemen leave. Mulder's office is destroyed. Everything is burned.

Mulder stands in his office is stunned silence.

Scully looks around the office, slogging through a lot of water, taking in the scope of the destruction. Even the "I Want to Believe" poster is badly burned. She places her arms around the stunned Mulder, putting her head on his chest.
