Eve

Episode by Kenneth Biller and Chris Brancato

Internal dating: Teena Simmons' father was killed on November 7th, and Mulder and Scully are called in the next day. However, as they were in the Arctic doing Ice at this very same time, it's all really rather tricky.

Greenwich, Connecticut. A man is found dead, two bite marks in his neck. His eight-year old daughter, Teena Simmons, looks scared and upset.

Scully reads the medical report (this is dated November 7th 1993) and finds out the man lost 4 litres of blood, although there was none actually at the scene. There is no trace evidence and the daughter, Teena, had only been a few minutes away from his side. Mulder starts talking about cattle mutilation, by which aliens (allegedly) chop up cattle for research purposes, and tells her the man was drugged with digitalis, which explains why he didn't kick up a fuss while being exsanguinated. He thinks UFO-related missing time explains why the girl saw nothing.

Mulder and Scully visit Teena, who is in a social services facility as she is now an orphan. AT first she is uncommunicative, but when Mulder asks if she saw any lights in the sky she opens up more. "The men from the clouds, they were after my Dad," she says, telling him she saw lightning and then strange darkness. "They wanted to exsanguinate him," she says, using the same word he earlier used to Scully.

News comes through about an identical incident in California which happened at exactly the same time as the first one they knew about. Scully thinks it's two serial killers working together, but Mulder says serial killers hardly ever work together.

At night, Teena is asleep in bed in a thunder storm. She gets up an barricades the door, then tries to escape through the window. Someone bursts into the room. As we see a flash of bright light, she screams (off-camera). When one of the care assistants rushes in, the window is open and the stuffed animal is on the ground, but Teena is gone.

Scully tells Mulder how someone has kidnapped Teena. "Someone, or something," he says. She says they've set up roadblocks but found no-one. "Maybe they weren't looking in the right direction," he says, pointing upwards with a smile.

Mulder and Scully visit the California crime scene where they meet the dead man's eight-year-old daughter Cindy Reardon. She looks identical to Teena Simmons. Scully asks Cindy's mother if Cindy was adopted, or if she was a twin. She says no to both questions. She does, however, admit that Cindy was conceived through in vitro fertilisation.

As they leave, Mulder and Scully discuss the case. Scully is still willing to believe the whole thing's a coincidence, but Mulder says he'd like to see the odds on that at Vegas. They then disagree over whether Teena was abducted (as Mulder says) or kidnapped (as Scully firmly corrects him.) "Potato, potahto," he says. Mulder plans to keep an eye on the girl while Mulder goes to the clinic where Cindy's mother had the IV treatment.

Scully finds out that the treatment was supervised by Dr Sally Kendrick. The doctor Scully talks to says she was fired in disgrace for tampering with fertilised ova and experimenting with eugenics, then disappeared. Scully finds out Kendrick was also in charge of the Simmons' IVF program.

Mulder and Scully discuss the case in his motel room. The phone rings, but it's only a series of clicks. Recognising this as a message from Deep Throat, Mulder virtually pushes Scully out, saying he wants to sleep on it. She is suspicious and asks him if he's having a girl round. "What's a girl?" he says, telling her he'll just watch a movie on television.

Mulder meets Deep Throat, who is anxious to be sure that Scully didn't follow him. Deep Throat tells Mulder about the Lichfield Experiment. This took place in the early 50s. A group of genetically engineered children, all called Adam and Eve, were raised on a compound and monitored closely. One of the Eves, Eve 6, in is a high security prison and he will make sure they can get permission to see her.

Mulder and Scully visit Eve 6. She is hiding in the dark at the corner of the padded cell, well retrained after having assaulted a guard. Scully recognises her as looking identical to Sally Kendrick. She says all the Adams and Eves are very intelligent, but most have committed suicide. When asked if she is Sally Kendrick she says that isn't her name, but "She is me and I am her." She is bitter saying "they" made her what she is, but she is the one who has to suffer. They still come to test her to see what went wrong with the project. The Adams and Eves, she says, have some extra chromosomes which give them heightened strength, heightened intelligence, but also murderous urges. "You don't believe me," she tells Scully, "I have proof." She shows them a photograph of all the Eves together a children. They are identical to Cindy and Teena, and Mulder realises Sally Kendrick was cloning herself.

Watched by her mother, Cindy says her prayers and goes to bed. Mulder and Scully watch outside. Mulder's current theory is that Sally Kendrick and the only other surviving Eve (according to Eve 6, Eve 7 and 8 are both still at large) killed the two fathers and are now coming for Cindy, having already taken Teena. Their aim, he says, is to keep the girls "in the family." Suddenly they see a figure in the girl's bedroom window. Scully goes into the house, where she is knocked over. Mulder confronts the woman, an Eve, who is carrying Cindy, but she has a gun and is able to get away.

Sally Kendrick takes Cindy to a motel where she introduces her to Teena. The motel manager recognises her (presumably from the news) and calls the police.

Sally says she's always been keeping track of them, as she'd hoped that her work had corrected the flaw in the Lichfield Project - in other words, that it had removed the violent and psychotic streak that came with the other abilities. Their murders of their fathers have revealed that she was unsuccessful. She asks them how they knew of each other's existence and how they planned the murders. "We just knew," she say, to both questions. They say they killed their fathers because they weren't really their fathers. "We have no parents," they say. "We weren't born. We were created." Sally tells them they are special, but they must learn not too give in to their genetic urges. With training and medication, she says, they can become like her and not like the other Eves. Suddenly she starts convulsing, and they tell her they've poisoned her with digitalis. As he is dying, she asks them why they're doing this. "You tell us," they say. "You created us. We're your mistake." She picks up a knife, saying she intends to correct that mistake.

Mulder, Scully and the police arrive to find Sally dead on the floor. The girls are huddled together, saying "they" tried to poison them - "they" being Sally and "another lady." Mulder and Scully believe them, and start searching for Eve 8.

Mulder and Scully take responsibility for the girls and prepare to drive them home. In the back of the car, the girls hold hands, then announce that they need to go to the bathroom. Mulder and Scully go as well, but one of the girls sneaks out and puts poison in the two diet sodas. They then all return to the car. Both Mulder and Scully take a sip of their drinks and remark on how sweet they are. Mulder then remembered he's left his keys inside and goes to get them. He notices a green liquid just where the drinks were, and rushes out, shouting urgently at Scully and "accidentally" dropping her drink. While he is whispering to her what happened, the girls sneak off.

Mulder and Scully look for the girls around lots of parked cars and trucks. Mulder grabs them, but they scream for help and a passer-by, assuming he's kidnapping them, allows them to escape again. However, Mulder recaptures them. "We didn't do anything wrong," they say. "We're only little girls."

Mulder urges Cindy's mother to insist on the truth about the project, but she's unforgiving and burns Cindy's photograph, saying the only important thing is that she's not really her daughter.

The two girls, in cells marked Eve 9 and Eve 10, are opposite Eve 6's cell. "So nice to have company," she tells them. A visitor comes to see them. It is Eve 8. "We've been waiting," one of the girls says. She asks how they knew she'd come for them. "We just knew," they say.
