Herrenvolk

Episode by Chris Carter

Sequel to Talitha Cumi

In a lush part of rural Alberta, Canada, a telephone repair man climbs a pole to start working on a wire. As he works, a bee stings him. Five identical silent boys, blonde hair/blue eyes, are on the ground looking at the man. As the man talks to them (Aye, your mom every get you mixed up), he goes into anaphylactic shock and falls off the phone pole. The boys, wordless, watch him die on the ground. As some more bees start flying around the man, the boys walk off into a field.

(The credit roles. "The Truth is Out There" does not appear -- instead the ominous "Everything Dies" shows up.)

Meanwhile, back on Bond Mill Road, Mulder, Mr. Smith and Scully are looking at the Bounty Hunter (aka: The Mighty Morphing Power Alien or Arnold Swartzenalien) moves toward Mr. Smith. Smith takes off, Mulder follows, yelling back to Scully to stay out of the bad guy's way and not to use her gun.

A rather long chase follows through the mill where the Bounty Hunter and Mulder nearly catch up to Mr. Smith several times. Smith is finally trapped on the roof of the mill when the Bounty Hunter comes through the roof door. Smith jumps 15 or so feet off the roof and onto a landing. Mulder is there. The Bounty Hunter follows, but Mulder and Smith have a decent lead.

Scully runs into Mulder and Smith. Mulder tells her to get the car. As she drives to the mill door, the Bounty Hunter jumps onto the car hood. She beeps the horn to warn Mulder. Mulder and Smith escape through another exit, but the Bounty Hunter is just behind them. As he climbs a mountain of wood chips, he loses sight of Mulder and Smith. Mulder has buried himself in the wood chips and attacks the Bounty Hunter with the alien ice pick. He falls unconscious with the green ooze coming out of his neck.

Mulder chases after Smith who is trying to flee by boat. Mulder begs him to save his mother.

Scully arrives in time to see the Smith and Mulder ride off the a boat. She also notices the Bounty Hunter with the ice pick in his neck. The green ooze is gone. As she goes to see if he's dead, the Bounty Hunter grabs her around the neck and starts to choke her. He asks where Mulder is going, but she doesn't know. As she starts to faint, he lets go of the choke hold.

Mulder and Smith go up the river. Smith warns Mulder that the Consortium will have killers waiting in Mulder's mom's room if they go there. Mulder says they will not kill Smith in daylight but Smith disagrees. He want to take Mulder to a place where Mulder can see his sister. Mulder agrees to go with Smith.

In the Providence Hospital room, Mrs. Mulder has an assassin, the Cancerman and the non English sounding Elder from the Consortium sitting there. The Elder has X's photos of Mrs. Mulder and the Cancerman. They decide to set a trap, tell X Mrs. Mulder is going to be killed and see what happens.

In daylight, Mulder, now on the road with Smith, finally calls Scully, who is sitting in her car on Bond Mill Road. She seems really ticked about being dumped again. Mulder senses she's not OK - she give him the "I'm fine" voice. She's really not, the Bounty Hunter has the Ice Pick on her as he sits in the back seat. Mulder tells her he is fine (and its important to him that she know he's fine) and that he's in Canada. The Bounty Hunter leaves Scully's car and drives off. She warns Mulder that the Bounty Hunter is alive and looking for him.

In Canada, Mulder and Smith run out of gas about 20 miles from their destination. They take a short cut which drops 10 miles off their walk.

Scully is called into Skinner's office. Skinner is worried about them. She tells she and Mulder were looking for Mr. Smith. Scully has no answers for Skinner but he has a few for her. She sent him a memo with pictures of the 6 identical Mr. Smiths the night before. Skinner checked, none of them have been to work since the restaurant shooting. Skinner downloaded the work in the personal computer files from the Mr. Smiths computers. They have 7+ gigabytes info each in their PC's.

On the Smiths' PC's, there are listings with an abbreviation of SEP on a data line with a 20 letter code and a 15 digit number. Scully seems to recognize some of the codes but won't share that info with Skinner and the always helpful Agent Pendrell, who was trying to decode it. She takes a page of their work and says she may know who can read it. Skinner asks if its Mulder and she answer no, it is more in her line of work.

Mulder and Smith find the telephone worker, now dead 1 day, covered in bee stings. They walk past him and onto a field. Mulder sees plants being grown for pollen and then his sister -- looking exactly as she did when she was taken. She's 8. Mulder goes running to his sister, but she does not recognize him (It's me, Fox). When she won't speak, Smith tells Mulder that she is a drone, a worker. She is in fact, harvesting the plants with one of the identical boys who saw the telephone worker die.

Mulder is taken to a town where a group of identical Samanthas live with the identical boys in small homes. They have no parents. Mulder is shocked by what he sees but knows they are clones. Smith wants to leave but Mulder wants to look around. Smith goes to get some gas.

Scully puts of up tape X in Mulder's apartment. She's not there two minutes when there is a knock on the door. Mr. X tells Scully he knows she is in there. X says he's been waiting for Mulder. Mulder's mom is in danger and he wants to talk to Mulder -- would Scully give Mulder that message. Scully says no. She wants some info from him. What does SEP stand for? SEP is Smallpox Elimination Project. X warns Scully not to go into the SEP data -- protect Mrs. Mulder.

Smith arrives back at the little house where the first Samantha lives with a gallon of gas. Mulder wants to take the little Samantha back with him. Smith starts going off on some tangent about the greater good Mulder can do. Mulder wants the basic truth explained to him. No chance, however, since barrelling down the road in a car is the Bounty Hunter.

Mulder, the little Samantha and Mr. Smith flee into a house where bees are farmed. Smith and little Samantha have a natural immunity to bee stings, but Mulder can't go in. He decides to douse himself with gasoline (strange for a guy afraid of fire) and the hide in the house. Only one problem... one way in, one way out. They are trapped.

The Bounty Hunter pulls up in front of the house. He goes in, opening the ice pick. He looks for the trio but they are not there until a wall of bees falls down on him. He starts getting stung -- hundreds of bees are attacking him as Mulder & Co. race out of the building.

Scully meets up with Agent Pendrell. She's figured out some more of the code. She tells him SEP is the Smallpox Elimination Program. The 20 letter code is something doctors know about amino acids. This seemed to make sense to Pendrell but the digits were all different. Scully agreed -- this may be a catalogue Scully takes off her jacket - showing Pendrell a biopsy she had done on her smallpox vaccine.

Scully puts on a little presentation for Skinner and several higher ups. She shows them the microscopic look at her biopsy. She shows them a protein she was given in her inoculation and says it is a marker. Skinner and the higher ups are confused so Scully explains it as a way to catalogue people. Everyone who has gotten the Smallpox vaccine -- billions of people.

One of the higher ups laughs at Scully's ideas, telling her they sound more like one of Mulder's theories than her's. She said she thought that too, until she took a biopsy from Pendrell who had the same protein -- but it was in a different place. Skinner thought the idea of being catalogued and tagged was strange -- who was doing it. Scully thought it was a government agency but thought only Mr. Smith would have an answer. Skinner pulled Scully out of the meeting -- giving her the speech he usually gives Mulder about his ideas. Scully defends her theories to Skinner, saying they are all based on science and that is why she works with Mulder -- to find scientific fact in his ideas.

Their argument is cut short when Scully's phone rings. It's Mulder -- he's got Smith and the little Samantha in the Bounty Hunter's car. He's coming back to the States -- he wants Smith to see his mother. He's afraid something will happen to Smith before he can save Mrs. Mulder. Scully tells Mulder there will be a ton of back up -- everyone wants to see Mr. Smith.

Just as Mulder hangs up, the Mighty Morphing Power Alien, covered in bee stings drives the phone worker's van right into the phone booth -- Mulder jumps out before the phone booth is smashed into a million pieces. The van plows into the car with Mr. Smith and little Samantha. The Bounty Hunter goes to Mulder, and warns him that Smith is not all Mulder thinks he is. Mulder is willing to trade his life for Smith's and the little girl's. The Bounty Hunter is intrigued, their lives for his? No, Mulder said, his life for his mother's. The Bounty Hunter tells Mulder sorry, everything dies.

While Mulder is talking to the Bounty Hunter, Smith, whose car door was crushed in the accident tries to flee. He leaves the little girl in the car. The Bounty Hunter picks Mulder about four feet off the ground and throws him into the parked van. He falls unconscious onto the ground. Smith is now faltering as he runs. The Bounty Hunter goes after him.

At Mrs. Mulder's room, about 50 FBI agents, including Scully and Skinner have waited 5 hours and no Mulder, no Mr. Smith. The hospital is furious, they are hurting the care of other patients. Skinner is equally peeved -- where's Mulder. Mulder shows up minutes later. He is a beaten, smells of gasoline, mumbling to himself, shivering --everyone is in coats and jackets, he has his sleeves up. Mulder goes past a very concerned Scully and Skinner into his mother's room. He's in shock according to Scully, so she covers him with a blanket. He keeps mumbling "she'll never know" with tears in his eyes until he collapses, weeping into Scully's arms.

Back at Mulder's apartment, the X is in the window. Mr. X is at Mulder's door. When he sees the apartment is dark and empty, he's suspicious. He walks down the hall, looking over his shoulder for someone, but no one's there. When he hits the elevator down button, he pulls his gun. When the door opens, its too late -- an assassin, the third guy in Mrs. Mulder's room plugs him twice.

Mulder and Scully are sitting quietly in his mother's room. The two have a great conversation about his belief in what he saw, including the little girl version of his sister. Scully agreed in his beliefs, but said the answers were in science. The two disagreed, but quietly, and spoke of hope. Mulder, who is heartbroken over his mother, tells Scully he felt he came so close, Scully said she knew they came close, that X helped her and he may have the answer they needed.

X, meanwhile, isn't dead. Profusely bleeding, he drags himself (leaving a blood trail that could never be cleaned) to Mulder's door. He opens the door and in a pool of his own blood writes "SRSG".

One month later, Mulder is sitting outside the Special Representative Secretary General's (SRSG) office at the UN. Mulder has sent him some info but his very attractive assistant Marita tells Mulder that the SRSG won't see him. She also tells him the fields in Canada are gone and there is no bee husbandry there. She asks him why he is so interested. He explains, choking back tears that he has suffered some serious losses in the last month and just wanted some help. The woman gives him a file with a picture of 100+ Samantha's working in another field. She tells Mulder that not everything dies.

Back in Mrs. Mulder's hospital room, she's still in a coma and the Cancerman is bedside. The Bounty Hunter walks in. Cancerman tells the Bounty Hunter that he must help Mrs. Mulder. That with his mother dead, Mulder will have nothing to lose and there is nothing more dangerous than a man with nothing to lose. Cancerman also reminds the Bounty Hunter how important Mulder is to the equation. The Bounty Hunter puts his hands on Mrs. Mulder, and she wakes up. The episode ends.
