In the San Joaquin Valley, a woman tells a group of Spanish workers her story:

In a migrant workers camp, a group of men, including a guy named Soledad are picked up for some farm work. Soledad sees his girlfriend, Maria, flirting with his brother Elidio as the truck pulls away. Maria's mom, the woman telling the story, tells her daughter to fetch their goats, which are running up a hill. She does, Elidio in tow.

Suddenly, there is a flash of thunder and yellow, hot, rain. The folks at the worker's camp run for cover. The storm is quick, but leaves yellow puddles. Two of the three goats Maria was chasing, return home. Maria, Elidio and one of the goats do not. Instead, Maria and the goat are found, exsanguinated and covered in a light fungus. Both are dead.

The credits roll -- the truth is out there.

Mulder and Scully investigate where the goat -- which is now rotting on the ground -- and Maria were found. Mulder explains he is interested in the yellow rain, which can occur after alien encounters and cattle mutilations. Maria's body has not been examined, since she is an illegal and not high priority.

Mulder and Scully cause a near riot when they go to the migrant workers camp. Mulder, fortunately, speaks enough Spanish to explain they are FBI, not INS and they are there to help. Maria's mother tells Mulder and Scully Maria was killed by El Chupacabras, a goat like creature -- big head, small body, which sucks the life out of people.

Soledad disagrees, claiming the killer was his brother, El Chupacabras was fairy tale. Mulder, of course, buys into the El Chupacabras theory while Scully thinks the dead is a tale for the local cops. Both agree the local cops don't care, so Scully goes to look at the body while Mulder tries to find Elidio.

Mulder goes to the INS office in Fresno and meets an INS Agent named Lazano. Lazano explains that Elidio may be in custody since Jose Feliciano, Juan Valdez and Placido Domingo are in custody. When Mulder tells Lazano about the Chupacabras angle, Lazano thinks its all a fairy tale == an age old story.

Scully encounters a female ME who is not helpful at all. After being really tough on the ME, and deservedly so, Scully gets some help. As she unzips the body bag, Maria is covered in heavy fungus.

Lazano and Mulder question Elidio, who was busted as Erik Estrada. Elidio is in solitary, since the other illegals believe he is El Chupacabra. Elidio explains that there was a thunder clap and the yellow rain. When the storm stopped, Maria was dying. She died in his arms. Mulder and Lazano believed him.

When Elidio is shipped off for his INS hearing -- and probably right back to Mexico, Mulder asks that he be held. Lazano suggests he file the paperwork but warns the Elidio will be to Mexico and back before he gets an OK. The illegals won't sit with Elidio, so instead he sits in the front of the prison bus with the driver.

Scully pulls up. She and Mulder discuss the fungus killing the girl, not Elidio. The fungus is so common its found in household dust. Scully thinks that the pesticides the locals were exposed to over and over again made them open to all sorts of infections. Mulder is sticking with El Chupacabras.

As they drive along, Scully sees the INS bus is off the road, the illegals are fleeing. As Scully goes to the front of the bus, she sees the driver dead, covered with fungus. Later that night, INS has gotten all the illegals except Elidio. Mulder thinks Elidio may be spreading the fungus. Scully goes to look at the fungus with a biologist while Mulder and Lazano chase down Elidio.

Elidio makes a deal with a local barber to get a ride back to Mexico, but that will cost money. Elidio is sweaty but agrees to get the money. He gets a construction job from a local foreman.

Scully learns that the fungus that killed the bus driver was athlete's foot. The fungus isn't a killer, an enzyme, which looks a lot like the yellow rain, is the problem. The doctor puts one drop of the yellow enzyme on some athlete's foot and it grows like nuts. Scully is very worried about a big spread of this.

Mulder and Lazano interview some locals. They find out Elidio got work. Lazano tells Mulder that the locals believe Elidio is Chupacabras. They are waiting for his brother Soledad to kill him for his woman. Lazano isn't interested in this fight, since "God curses the man who stands between two brothers." Mulder disagrees.

Elidio is getting sicker and sicker. He is sweaty and weak. As he looks for the foreman for help, he notices his brother is coming, carrying a crow bar. Elidio flees, Soledad follows. Soledad finds a porta john and opens it. The foreman, dead, is covered with fungus. Elidio drives off in the foreman's truck.

Elidio goes to see his cousin Gabrielle. She is a maid in a mansion. He wants her to go back with him to Mexico. She has heard the stories about him and is afraid. He begs but she won't go. He runs off.

Scully warns Mulder not to touch Elidio or anything he's touched. Scully thinks he is typhoid Mary. Mulder has some far off theory that the thunder was a meteorite landing in a local lake, cooking the lake making the water toxic and raining on the people. Scully thinks Mulder is way off and tells him to find Elidio. Lazano jokes that Mulder has his own stories like the Chupacabras.

The barber who was going to help Elidio arrives and rats him out to Lazano. Mulder and Lazano track Elidio down to a truck stop and chase him. He gets away -- Lazano and Mulder can't tackle him or touch him. Elidio winds up on a truck with some goats.

Several hours later, the truck driver and the goats are dead from a fungus. Mulder and Scully can't understand how Elidio just disappears. Lazano said they are invisible. They are the workers who pick crops and clean house but just disappear. Maria's mother comes by and tells Mulder and Scully that Soledad has gone to Gabrielle's house to wait for Elidio.

At Gabrielle's, Lazano searches while Mulder and Scully interrogate Gabrielle. She denies knowing where they are. She also thinks Elidio is El Chupacabras. Scully tries to disabuse her of that thought, but she's a believer. After the three leave, Mulder thinks more is going on than meets the eye. They stake out her driveway.

Elidio shows up at Gabrielle's night job -- a market. He tries to steal some food. The nuts he touches, before getting caught by a store employee, instantly get covered with fungus.

Mulder's right when Soledad comes out of the apartment a few minutes later. Gabrielle gets a call from Elidio and warns him that Soledad is on his way to the store. Elidio flees as Soledad hits the store. Soledad searches the store, but can't find Elidio. Mulder, Scully and Lazano find Soledad and disarm him. Scully notices the aisle where Elidio was -- covered in fungus along with the store employee who caught Elidio stealing nuts.

Elidio goes to Gabrielle's. He is grey -- his head as large as an alien. He is horrified by how he looks and realizes he is El Chupacabras. He screams.

A few hours later, Mulder, Scully and Lazano return to Gabrielle's. She tells them Elidio has returned to Mexico. She gave Elidio her money -- she was afraid of him.

Lazano wants out, processing the brother at INS. Mulder thinks this whole thing stinks and so does Scully. Mulder remembers what Lazano said -- "God curses the man who stand between two brothers". Scully orders a hazmat team and they are off to the worker's camp.

At the camp, Lazano orders Elidio out. He and his brother face off. There are two stories at this point.

The old woman's: Aliens come, kill Lazano and take Elidio and his brother. Elidio is Chupacabras and with the aliens they suck the blood of the young and healthy. Elidio punishes his brother by making him suck the blood of the sick and dying goats.

Gabrielle's: Lazano brought the brothers together to fight it out. When the two finally see Elidio in the light, they see his sickness. Soledad has Lazano's gun but won't shoot his brother. Lazano tries to get the gun back. The two fight and Soledad accidentally kills Lazano. The two brothers flee. The hazmat guys take away Lazano, who has some fungus on him.

Mulder and Scully are seen in the last scene trying to explain all this to Skinner, who hates it. But they have no answer. Scully's science doesn't work on this one while Mulder's Chupacabras is too odd. The barber who promised to drive them to Mexico is also dead, covered with fungus. Since they are illegals, no one really notices them if they are on their way to Mexico. No one cares. Skinner is not pleased, but the episode ends.
