In Philadelphia Pennsylvania, a stock broker named Ed Jerse loses his divorce case from his wife. Depressed, Ed goes to a cheesy biker bar and gets really drunk. When the bartender cuts him off, Ed goes across the street to a tattoo parlor. Looking around, he finds a tattoo of "Betty", a look alike for pin up girls in the '40's. She has very red lipstick, and looks like Debra Mazer, the actress. Ed gets the tattoo with the words "Never Again" under Betty. He returns to his new, single guy apartment and blacks out on the floor.

Credits roll: The Truth is Out There.

In DC in the middle of the night at the Vietnam War Memorial, Mulder is getting some info from a Russian about UFOs. Scully, however, isn't paying attention. She wanders off, noticing some of the mementos left behind at the monument. One is from a sister to her brother dead 20 years. It includes a rose. Scully takes a pedal while Mulder and the Russian guy continue.

The next morning in Philly, Ed Jerse is back at work, looking hung over. He's trying to sell stock over the phone when some one calls "loser" to him and cackles. He blows his customer off the phone and goes postal in the office. He demands someone call him a loser to his face. The voice tells him to trash his coworkers desk. He does that, but is sent home.

The next day, Mulder is in his weekend clothes while Scully is still dressed for work. Mulder is being forced to take a week's vacation -- he has a backlog of eight weeks and if he doesn't take this week, he will be suspended without pay for 8 weeks. Since he needs to pay the rent and live, he's reluctantly taking the week but confident that Scully will keep an eye on things.

Scully wants to know in the basement why she doesn't have a desk. Mulder shows her an area he thinks of as her's, but says he'll get a her a desk if she really wants one. Of course they won't be able to move but maybe they can put their desks together and play battleship. Both are in a bad mood and fixing for a fight.

Mulder is a little ticked at Scully for wandering off during the interview of the Russian. Scully totally takes apart Mulder's interview, saying it was an episode of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Mulder smiles a little at the "Moose and Squirrel" mention. Mulder assigns her to check out the Russians story and has made arrangements for her to go Philly to do an INS check.

Scully doesn't want to go. Mulder suggests she is refusing an assignment. Scully doesn't like the idea that he is assigning her anything. Mulder is annoyed. The X Files are his life, and Scully says they've become her's. He seems to be interested, but she's annoyed. He reminds her that she was only assigned to the department while he worked hard to get the X Files opened. He tells her if she doesn't want to go, fine. He also thinks maybe a little time away from one another is a good thing. Scully asks where Mulder is going. He replies a spiritual journey and suggests she does the same.

In Philly, Ed has been fired from his job. He's being razzed big time by the voice. He starts beating on the floor, thinking it is the woman downstairs. She starts blasting her stereo -- David Cassidy music.

Suddenly there is a knock on the door. Jehovah Witnesses. Ed is acting weird, scaring the followers off. The voice is still going after Ed -- calling him a failure. Ed goes down to the David Cassidy music playing neighbor -- a woman -- and beats her into submission. Putting her in a tall box, he takes her to the basement and throws her in the incinerator.

Ed is suddenly horrified by what he did. The voice starts calling herself Ed's right hand gal. It is from his tattoo - Betty.

The next morning, Mulder tries to call Scully from a treelined road. He gets her voicemail. Scully is in Philly, staking out a Russian business, right next door to where Ed got his tattoo. She's bored. When her subject goes into the tattoo store, Scully goes in as well, taking a look at the tattoos. Ed, meanwhile, is in the back, demanding that there is something wrong with his tattoo. Scully notices a cool tattoo -- a snake eating its own tail. The store owner asks Scully if she likes Ed's tattoo -- she does. She loves the color. The owner suggests that everyone gets the tattoo they deserve and he'll fix Ed's once the skin around it heals.

The tattoo isn't too thrilled that Scully is looking at the tattoo. Calling Scully a cheap redhead, Betty warns him not to talk to Scully. Ed puts on his coat and warns Scully not to get a tattoo, calling his tattoo "impulsive". Scully wishes she was that impulsive.

Ed asks Scully why is she in the area. Scully lies to him, telling him she's in town visiting her aunt. aunt. Ed gives her his card and asks her out on a date. Scully says no, she's going home that night. Ed says give him a call the next time she's in town.

That night, Scully's finished the investigation. Its all a fraud scheme. Mulder calls from his spiritual journey -- he's gone to Graceland and wants to share it with her. Mulder is unhappy that she's wrapped up the case. She's annoyed he's questioning him. She tells him the case is done.

Scully tells him she's spending an extra night in Philly. He teaser her about why -- does she have a date? When Scully's won't answer, Mulder is shocked. She says she'll see him in DC and hangs up. Mulder is ticked off and makes an Elvis-like karate chop in Graceland.

Back at Ed's apartment, the tattoo is comforting Ed about Scully not making the date. Scully calls --"Its Dana" and she wants to take him up on dinner. She agrees to meet him in an hour. The tattoo is pissed so Ed tries to burn it off with a cigarette.

Scully arrives and noticed the Jehovah Witnesses banging on Ed's downstairs neighbor's door. When she goes to see Ed, he has a bloody bandage on his tattoo. The two agree that a fancy dinner isn't what they are in the mood for. Scully admits she doesn't date much, and notices that Ed has burned a whole in his family picture, taking himself out of the photo, but leaving his kids. Scully asks Ed to just take her out for a drink, nothing more.

Scully and Ed go back to the biker bar. She tells him that every few years, she feels the need to break away from her good girl life. As a teen, she adored her father -- still does. She still smoked however, just to do something for herself. Her career was the same thing and now, she wants to feel free from "other fathers". She wants to see Ed's tattoo again. He says no, its time to be free again and if she wants to see a tattoo, get her own.

Several minutes later, they are in the tattoo parlor. She's getting the same tattoo she looked at earlier. Ed wants the same red in his tattoo in her's. Although it hurts, Scully gets the tattoo and seems to enjoy the feeling of freedom. The two go back to Ed's apartment. Since the weather is bad, he wants her to stay over. She's unsure but he promises to be a gentleman. She feels different about the tattoo and isn't sure its a bad thing. Ed offers her his bed, he'll sleep on the couch.

Scully wants to look at his tattoo again -- this time as a doctor. When she notices the burns, the tattoo starts to yell. The tattoo doesn't want Scully touching her. The tattoo also said Ed's having "bad" thoughts liking Scully and if Ed kisses Scully, Scully's dead. Ed disobeys the tattoo.

The next morning, Mulder's snuck back into the basement. He tries Scully's hotel room, but she isn't there.

Ed wakes up on the couch, dressed in his undershirt and pants. The tattoo has shut up, so he's feeling good. He goes to get some breakfast for him and Scully.

A couple of minutes later the cops are at the door just after Ed leaves. Scully wakes up in Ed's bed, fully dressed but wearing Ed's shirt. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't.

The cops question Scully, who shows her badge. They are still a little suspicious, since Scully looks like Ed's girlfriend, not an FBI agent. The cops admit blood was found in the neighbor's apartment and there was some interesting stuff in the blood -- a chemical. Scully is told by the cops that they want to speak to Ed and if he won't come down, they'll get him.

Scully uses Ed's computer to log onto the FBI's database. The chemical found in the blood is a red dye that causes audio hallucinations. She calls Mulder, but he's got headphones on, listening to something. By the time he's noticed the call, Scully's hung up.

Ed returns and Scully tells him about the woman downstairs. She tells him about the blood and the chemical dye in the tattoo. They need to go to the hospital since the chemical causes dangerous and abnormal behavior. Ed admits the tattoo was speaking to him.

The two agree to go to the hospital. Scully gets dressed but drops her FBI badge. Ed notices it but the tattoo wants to know what Scully was doing before he arrived. He hits redial on the phone and gets the FBI.

Furious that she called the FBI on him, Ed attacks Scully, who puts up a pretty good fight. She gets away from him and hides in the bathroom, grabbing a pair of scissors. When he gets in, she tries to flee, but he knocks her out. The tattoo tells Ed to burn Scully. Wrapping her in the bedsheets, he takes her down to the basement.

Just as he's about to put her in the incinerator, Scully fights back, cutting him with scissors she hid in her hand.. The two duke it out, but Scully's amazed when Ed puts his arm into the incinerator, burning the tattoo off.

A week later, Scully's back at the FBI, battered but dressed to the hilt. Mulder's teasing her about being a two time X File and the fact that she's looking better than she did in the hospital. He's unrelenting. Ed's in a burn unit and on his way to a psychiatric hospital because of the tattoo, which Mulder thinks is a shame since maybe he'd join in on the fun and get a NY Yankees tattoo on his butt to celebrate the Yankee's World Series win. He's really being nasty.

Scully says nothing.

Mulder starts to feel bad about his little tirade and goes off about another case.

Scully says nothing.

Mulder finally asks if this was all about not having a desk.

She tells him that not everything is about him. It is her life. He starts to say its also ....but doesn't finish the sentence. The episode finishes with the two in an uncomfortable silence.
