Paper Hearts

Episode by Vince Gilligan

Internal dating: An evidence bag in this episode is tagged November 29th 1996, thus clashing horribly with Tunguska and Terma, which are spread over at least ten days from around the 22nd or 23rd.

Mulder is sleeping on his couch early one Sunday morning. A red light shows up on his ceiling, waking him. The red light says "follow" so he follows the red light out the door. Suddenly he is in the woods. An old 1970's El Camino with a camper roof is in a recreational park parking lot. The red light then says "MadHat" on the Camino's camper roof. He continues to follow the red light into the park -- Boshner's Run in Manassas, VA. Well into the park, the red light points out a dead child -- a girl about 8 -- in a pile of leaves. The red light becomes a heart on the child's pajamas. She sinks into the leaves.

Mulder wakes up -- this was all a dream -- on his couch. He looks up Boshner's Run and finds out it is in Manassas. At 5am, he has a forensic team digging up the park. Scully arrives and asks what's going on. He has no answer -- it came to him in a dream. The forensic team, however, finds a child's skull

The credits roll: The Truth is out there

Scully, as the team begins to really dig, asks Mulder how he knew the girl was there. He takes a deep breath and tells her the vision came to him in dreams. He admits having it for several days and it finally went on long enough to figure it out. He asks the crew to dig out the girl's chest. When they don't do it fast enough, Mulder starts to dig, angering the forensic team. He tells them he knows who did this and that her clothing had been cut post mortem.

Scully warns him he is disturbing evidence, but Mulder says he knows the case by heart. He worked on it before. John Lee Roche killed 13 girls, 8 to 10 years old, from 1979 to 1990.

Back in the basement, Mulder pulls Roche's file and hands it to Scully. Mulder wrote a near perfect profile which caught Roche. Mulder believed the killer was a salesman who could stalk his victims on sales calls and return months later to kidnap, molest and kill the female child. Roche admitted to 13 killings. He would also cut a cloth heart -- Reggie Purdue called the case "Paper Hearts" off the child's Pjs and keep them as a trophy. Scully read Mulder's work and was very impressed.

Mulder tells Scully the FBI never found the hearts. He thought that if they would have found the hearts, they would have known exactly how many little girls Roche killed. Obviously there were more than 13.

Scully explains to Mulder that she thinks he solved this crime in his sleep. This case was so close to him, so important, that he never let it go and after years, answers came to him.

Scully reminds Mulder of his theory in "Aubrey" -- that a dream is "an answer to a question we haven't learned how to ask". She also told him he did a "very good job" on the Roche case. Mulder thought otherwise.

Scully's autopsy ID's the girl as a 1975 kidnapping victim, Addy Sparks. Mulder thinks the year was wrong, too early, but Scully is sure. Scully asks a very quiet Mulder if he is up to going to the dead girl's family. He is.

In Norristown, Pennsylvania, Scully and Mulder interview Addy Sparks' dad, Frank. He is heartsick, saying he thought missing was worse than dead, since you never knew. Now Frank Sparks wished he never knew his daughter was dead.

Leaving the Sparks house, Mulder has another vision-- the El Camino again, the red light again pointing to the camper window. Mulder tells Scully he knows where the hearts are -- in Roche's car where, as a travelling salesman, he would have access to it.

Mulder and Scully trace the car to a kid in Delaware. The kid thinks its cool that his car belonged to a serial killer. Mulder and Scully search the car but find nothing. When Mulder checks the El Camino's camper roof, however, he finds a copy of Alice in Wonderland in a rear panel. There are 16 hearts in the book -- two more victims

Mulder and Scully visit Roche in prison. He is tall -- 6 foot 5 -- bald and thin. He's shooting baskets in the prison gym. When Mulder and Scully walk into the gym, Roche greets Mulder kindly and remarks that he has a new partner. Mulder introduces "Agent Scully" and tells Roche they found Addy Sparks. Roche isn't surprised and continues his game.

Mulder asks why Roche lied about 13 victims when, since he found the hearts, there are 16 victims. Roche felt 13 sounded more magical. Scully tells Roche since he's doing multiple life sentences, he has nothing to lose by giving them the other victims. Roche says he has nothing to gain by telling them either. Mulder suggests that Roche may gain "a moment of decency" by letting the other victim's families have an answer, but Roche won't talk. He tells Mulder that he know this is important to Mulder. If Mulder can shoot a basket from 3 point range, he'll give up the girls' names.

Mulder makes the shot -- nothing but net -- but Roche laughs and asks why would he trust a child molester. Roche tells them if they bring him "his hearts" he'll consider telling them tomorrow.

Mulder obsesses at his desk over the 2 hearts before falling asleep. The red light returns and takes him out of the basement and back to his childhood home in Chillmark. It is 1973, the TV's on, Samantha is waiting for him to play stratego. Mulder is still an adult but Samantha is talking to him like he's 12. He smiles at her and tries to stop her abduction. This time, however, aliens don't take her -- Roche does. Mulder wakes up at his desk screaming Samantha.

The next morning, visibly upset Mulder interviews Roche alone in a prison interrogation room. Roche wants his hearts but Mulder wants to know where Roche was in 1973. Roche told Mulder he sold vacuum cleaners in 1973 in Boston. He made a trip to Martha's Vineyard and sold a vacuum to Mr. Mulder. Roche told Mulder the make and one of two models. Mr. Mulder had a hard time choosing. Mulder asked Roche what happened to Samantha but Roche won't tell him until he gets his hearts.

Mulder rears back and belts Roche, knocking him from his chair.

The prison guards walk in. Roche reports Mulder, but the guard tells Roche he didn't see it happen. Scully saw the whole thing, however.

Scully tries to calm a frantic yet depressed Mulder. He thinks Roche took Samantha, which means she's probably dead. Scully tells Mulder no, Roche was on the internet the prior day and was probably able to check out Mulder's past.

Scully warns Mulder that Roche is emotionally blackmailing Mulder and he's going for it. She sympathizes with him -- he had a dream which became a nightmare.

Mulder tells Scully that his first dream came true. He also asks her if she ever believed his sister was taken by aliens. Before she can answer, Mulder says "No". Mulder asks her what does she believe.

Scully turns the question on him -- what does he believe. Mulder doesn't know anymore, but he needs an answer. A very worried Scully follows Mulder out of the jail.

Mulder goes to his mom's house in Connecticut and searches for a vacuum cleaner. Mrs. Mulder joins her son in the basement. He shows her the unidentified hearts, but since the stroke she remembers little. Mulder gives her a big hug and asks if "Dad" ever bought a vacuum cleaner. He did. When Mulder finds it, it is the one Roche mentioned.

The next morning, Mulder goes to Skinner and asks why he can't see Roche anymore. Skinner denied access to Roche after he saw a video of Mulder slapping Roche. Skinner is fuming at Mulder for the assault and a late arriving Scully for not reporting it. Mulder tells Skinner that Roche knows about his sister. Scully backs him up, Roche was selling vacuum cleaners in Boston in 1973 and made a sales trip to the Mulders in October of 1973. Skinner tells Mulder that he's way to close to this but Scully objects. Since Mulder caught Roche, found Addy Sparks and knows the case inside out -- and it is still technically his case from 1990 -- he should be allowed to finish it. Skinner reluctantly agrees but warns Scully to keep Mulder on a short leash.

Roche agrees to talk to Mulder and Scully if Mulder promises not to hit him anymore. Mulder sits unmoving until he finally shows Roche the unidentified hearts in evidence bags. When Roche tries to open them, Mulder stops him. He wants to know who the girls are. Roche tells Mulder he knows one of the girls. Scully demands proof. Roche tells them that Mulder and his sister were watching TV in their living room, playing a board game. The parents were at a neighbors. Mulder asks Roche how he knew. Roche tells Mulder he was at the window and watched them.

Roche asks Mulder which heart was his sisters. If he guess right, he'll have his answer. If he's wrong, he has another victim. Roche will give the location. Mulder picks and he and Scully are off to West Virginia.

In a West Virginia park, the word "MADHAT' is carved into a stone. Mulder, frantic, starts to dig next to the stone. Scully tries to stop him, he's ruining the crime scene. Mulder won't stop, he begs her to help. She does. Heartbroken, Mulder jumps back when he finds the child's skeletons.

At the morgue, Mulder screws up his courage to look at the remains. Its obvious he was crying earlier -- his eyes are puffy, sad. Scully walks in as he uncovers the bones. He runs his hands on the child's collar bone. He's looking for a break. Samantha broke her collar bone after falling off a swing. The corpse does not have a broken collar bone -- it is not Samantha. Mulder and Scully are visibly relieved, Scully holds his hand but Mulder wants to know who this child is.

Scully and a quiet Mulder re-interview Roche. Scully's talking. Roche gives up the girl's name and the year of the kidnapping. It is just 8 months after Samantha's abduction. Mulder returns Roche the final heart. Roche tells Mulder it is his sister's. Mulder wants to know where she is. Roche says no, Mulder wants to know everything. 23 years of his life went to this, Roche wants to walk him through it. Outside.

Before Mulder and Scully can say no, Roche tells them he knows he'd only be out of a day or two, but he'd be out. Besides, he tells them, he wants to see Mulder's face when they dig up Samantha. Scully gasps "Oh God" and tells Roche he'll never see anything else but his cell for the rest of his life. She leaves the interview room and Mulder follows.

In the anteroom, Scully asks if Mulder is OK and warns him not to get sucked into Roche's trap. Mulder agrees. Scully is nearly as upset as Mulder.

At home, Mulder calls a judge and gets Roche released into his custody. On the plane to Boston, Roche eyes a little girl, Caitlin, on the way to the men's room.

Back in DC, Skinner throws a fit when he finds out Mulder has Roche. Scully says she thinks she knows where they went but Skinner's still too angry. Scully tries to defend Mulder and his personal stake in the case. Skinner tells her that his personal stake in this case was her assignment and she failed. The two go to the Vineyard to find Mulder.

Mulder and Roche, are in Mr. Mulder's West Tisbury home. Roche sits down on Mr. Mulder's brown leather couch and reminisces about selling Mr. Mulder and his son the vacuum cleaner. Mulder tells him to remember the night and Roche does.

The Mulders went next door to play cards. He and Samantha were arguing about TV and playing Stratego. He cut the power. The front door was unlocked -- 1973 on the Vineyard was a different, safer time -- and walked in. Roche gave Mulder credit for trying to get his father's gun but Roche took Samantha away from this house and to a much better place.

Mulder asks if that's what Roche did in this house. Roche says yes. Mulder smirks at Roche and tells him "wrong house". The West Tisbury home they were in was Mr. Mulder's post divorce home. The original home was in Chillmark, 6 miles away. Roche lied and Mulder proved it.

Roche tells Mulder it was wishful thinking. He thought Mulder was in terrible denial. Wasn't it so much easier for Mulder to believe in aliens than in human monsters. Mulder compliments Roche on his salesman abilities and check the two into a Boston hotel for the night.

As Roche sleeps, handcuffed to the bed, Mulder sees the red light again. A young Samantha is locked in the back of the El Camino in the hotel parking lot. Mulder races out the door to save her. He grabs her from the car and hugs her as he pulls her to safety. The two hug and Mulder smiles a very wide smile. Suddenly the red light is back. It says "Bye" and Samantha, the El Camino and the light are gone.

A knock on the hotel door wakes Mulder. He is now handcuffed to the table and Roche, his side arm, his phone and ID are gone. Scully and Skinner are at the door.

Skinner is beyond angry. Mulder tells the two of them where Roche is going, however, after the little girl on the plane. When Mulder contacts the plane, they won't talk to him. They just gave an "Agent Mulder" the info about young passenger Caitlin a few minutes earlier.

Mulder, Skinner, Scully and half of the Boston Police meet at Caitlin's daycare center. She's been taken by an "Agent Mulder". The daycare worker is beside herself with guilt. After she tells the police its all her fault, Mulder disagrees, telling her its all his fault.

As they return to their car, Mulder apologizes to Scully, she was right. Mulder figures that Roche knows they will catch him soon so he probably didn't go too far. Scully gets his old Boston address -- on Alice Road. Mulder thinks he may be there since he's the Mad Hatter and Alice is Alice Road in Wonderland.

The FBI and Boston cops find nothing at the old apartment but Mulder notices a bus junkyard near by. With his ankle gun, he goes into the junkyard and finds Roche with Caitlin sitting in an abandoned bus.

Mulder gets Caitlin to close her eyes and count to 20 while he pulls his gun on Roche. Roche has Mulder's real gun on Caitlin. Mulder asks Roche not to let this end badly. Roche tells him he does not want to return to prison. It will end badly.

Scully and Skinner are at the door but Mulder has his gun at Roche's head. Roche taunts Mulder with the final heart -- Mulder won't kill Roche, Roche tells Mulder, since he's the only connection to Samantha. Mulder notices Roche is about to pull the trigger on the little girl.

Mulder blows Roche's brains out.

Back in the basement, Mulder's been crying again. He is staring at the heart again. Scully comes by with info on the heart. The dye is from 1969 to 1974. Mulder is trying so hard not to cry. Scully tells Mulder its not Samantha's. They'll find the little girl the heart belongs to. When Mulder tries to tell her their only lead it dead, Scully disagrees. She has faith in Mulder and he will find this child. They will find her.

Scully suggests Mulder go home and get some sleep. Mulder starts to laugh and Scully makes a face. The two share a hug and Scully leaves.

Mulder puts the final heart in his desk.
