Internal dating: The episode starts on April 29th 1996 and ends on May 10th.

Opens on a man digging a grave and burying a man in woods. Whilst washing off the blood on his kitchen the man attacks and kills another man whom he then drags out to his car. Police arrive and he sees their faces blur and then they look like the same man he killed in the kitchen. They police subdue him then find the body in the trunk - which actually is female and which the man calls Sarah.

Washington DC , April 29, 2.12am - Mulder is met in his car by a contact - not the usual - who gives him a newspaper article titled "Braddock Heights Man Kills Wife, Four Others" and tells him that he will want to follow it up. Mulder becomes angry and demands to know what 'they' want from him asking, "how do I know I'm not being played?". Man replies "You don't" and leaves, suggesting that if Mulder walks away from this "...more people will die".

Frederick County Psychiatric Hospital, Braddock Heights, Maryland. Mulder is waiting, watching a man in a cell. Scully arrives and he tells her that Joseph Patnick murdered five people and claimed to have been killing the same man over and over. He also tells of a babysitter in Patnick's neighbourhood who killed two kids claiming they were wolves. No motive has been found for the attacks. A Dr Stroman introduces himself, has been called in from DC to make a diagnosis. But he can't find one. Suggests that it may be some kind of organic delusional syndrome due to chronic amphetamine abuse. The patient then freaks out. Scully and Mulder follow the orderlies and the Doctor into the cell and note the TV is showing a Bosnian war criminal, Vladoslar Miriskovic. It is the same man that Patnick had seen when he killed.

Patnick's House. Scully asks Mulder where the case came from, voicing similar concerns that they are being used. Mulder justifies the case by pointing out there are dead bodies and confessed murderers, and he wants to find the connection. They find two kids in the house, skipping school to watch Patnick's huge TV. The TV goes static and Mulder notes a cable guy climbing down the telegraph pole. Scully finds hundreds of videos - cable news shows which are dated. She notes that Patnick was watching a cable news show when he went "wiggy" at the hospital.

2400 Court Motel. Mulder is scrolling through videos in his room. Goes to Scully's room and she tells him she has found a correlation between a particular news report on the atrocities in Bosnia featuring Miriskovic and the dates Patnick killed. Goes on to note recent studies linking violence on TV to actual violence. Mulder disagrees but does not offer an alternative. Scully decides to watch the rest of the tapes while Mulder goes to bed.

Scully hears the phone ring in Mulder's room. Hears muffled voices - "no she doesn't". She stops the video and goes to get some ice. She sees Mulder in a car talking to CSM. Smiling, Mulder hands over a video tape. She moves behind the drink machine to avoid the lights of an oncoming car and when she moves back the car is pulling away.

April 30, 9.48am. A woman is washing up and watching a game show. The room goes blurry and then she looks out her window and sees a man in a hammock straddled by a blonde woman who is kissing him and giggling. She is seen taking a shotgun from a closet and a shot is heard.

Scully's motel room. Scully looks very tired and stressed. Mulder knocks and tells her there has been another murder. Scully gets to the car before him and checks the ashtray. She notes the car has been moved and asks him about it. He says that he went out for the paper. She looks very wary. Mulder says that the new murder is a housewife gone berserk which seems to fit their pattern.

Crime scene. The 'murderer' is Helene Riddock who claims to have looked out the window and seen her husband in the hammock with a blonde woman. But the victim isn't her husband but her neighbour and the blonde woman turns out to be a golden retriever. The man was taking a nap with his dog. Inside, the TV is on a home shopping channel, and the room is full of home shopping goods. Scully finds more tapes. Mulder sees a cable van outside and a man going up the telegraph pole. He chases him. Scully, watching more TV looks out the window and sees Mulder going up the pole. He retrieves a shiny, new looking cable device. Scully suggests that they get Pendrell to analyse it and offers to take it to him. Mulder says he'll do it and she should interview Helene Riddock, ask her about the device. Scully looks annoyed.

The Lone Gunmen's. The Lone Gunmen tell Mulder that the device looks like a cable channel blocker but they say there is a difference between a normal feed and one that is through the device. They explain that TV is a series of still pictures fired at the TV tube and there is information being put into the space between the TV pictures. They don't know what the information is and can't take the device apart without destroying it. Their only sure conclusion is that the device is emitting a signal.

Mulder in his car. Goes to call Scully but the phone rings before he can dial. Scully asks where are you, angry that he didn't take the device to Pendrell. Mulder tells her what it is but doesn't want to discuss it further over the phone. Scully thinks she hears a click, then another. She asks Mulder who's listening. Mulder , sounding frustrated at Scully's paranoia, says that he'll be right there. Not to go anywhere. She hangs up and Mulder rings back but Scully rips the phone out of the wall and then checks the mouthpiece for a bug. She then ransacks the room looking for bugs but doesn't find any. The room goes blurry on her. Car lights shine through the window. She ducks and pulls her gun. She hears whispered voices and fires a number of times at the door before heading out the back. Mulder goes after her but she is nowhere to be found.

May 1, 6.04am. Mrs Scully answers her phone to Mulder asking if she had heard from Dana. Tells her that Scully is missing - she ran off last night. Mulder sees Skinner and hangs up on Mrs Scully. Tells Skinner that they are conducting the search like one looking for an escaped convict. He wants the agents to be told just to keep an eye on her if they find her until he gets there. Mulder suggests that she is suffering a paranoid psychosis but he doesn't know the mechanism. He does, however, note that it is to do with the videos although they have no proof yet. Skinner declines, noting that she is obviously dangerous. He suggests that Mulder find her first.

Mulder's apartment He puts an X on the window. Frohicke rings, they have pulled something off the device.

The Lone Gunmen's. They have blanked out the visible frames on a tape and have found that the device stimulates electrical impulses in the brain. Byers points out that studies into subliminal influence have shown a correlation between heightened suggestibility and that manipulation of the photic driving response. Mind control? Mulder asks. But why wasn't he affected. He notes that the impulses are red and green, and asks if colour could be a factor as he is red green colour blind. His cell phone rings. Mulder has to go - they think they have found Scully and he has to identify the body.

Frederick County Morgue 6.21pm. Mulder runs into his initial contact in the morgue parking garage. The contact suggests that Mulder is being watched. That while Mulder is chasing his partner, evidence is being destroyed. Mulder is told to follow the evidence. Otherwise, by tomorrow the responsible parties will be out of your reach. Mulder walks off. The body is not Scully and Mulder suggests that someone should inform her mother. The doctor says they have tried, but she isn't answering her phone. Mulder is surprised and heads off quickly.

Scully's mother's house. Mulder goes to Scully's mother's and demands to see Scully. Mrs Scully insists that she isn't there but Mulder pushes past her. He walks into the dining room. Scully comes out from around a corner and pulls a gun on him. Mulder tells Scully that he is here to help her but she says to her mother, "I told you Mom, he's here to kill me". Mulder tries to explain to her that he is on her side and tries to explain to her that although she doesn't know it, she is sick, with the same thing that drove those other people to murder. He is slowly moving towards her and she demands he step back. Her mother steps in, telling Dana she isn't herself and that Mulder is telling the truth. Scully insists is isn't the truth, that Mulder has lied to her from the beginning, that he's never trusted her. Mulder replies she is the only one he trusts. She goes on, "You're in on it, you're one of them, you're one of the people who abducted me, you put that thing in my neck, you killed my sister!". Mrs Scully puts herself between Scully and Mulder, telling her that what she is saying isn't true. Scully yells at her to get out of the way. Mrs Scully talks calmly, asking if Scully trusts her, if she knows that she would never hurt her etc. She gets Scully to drop the gun as she takes her into her arms and they collapse to the floor, Scully sobbing.

Northeast Georgetown Medical Centre: Scully's Room, May 2, 1.43pm. Scully tells Mulder that she is ashamed of her actions. She says that she was so sure - she saw and heard things that made her think everyone was out to get her. Mulder quips now she knows how he feels all the time. Mulder goes on to say he had been doing some checking. Patnick had thought he was killing a Bosnian war criminal who the media had described as a modern day Hitler - both Patnick's parents had been Holocaust survivors. Riddock had been scared that her husband would cheat on her. The video signal turned ones anxieties into a kind of dementia - a person's own worst nightmare - like Scully thinking Mulder would betray her. Scully describes her seeing Mulder with Cancerman. They consider the possibility that Cancerman is behind this.

Mulder talking to Scully's Doctor. Mulder asks what treatment the Doctor has prescribed for Scully. The Doctor tells him there is nothing medically wrong with her. She mentions that high levels of seratonin were found in her brain - which has been associated with mania. Mulder asks if the Doctor would have made a diagnosis of amphetamine abuse for someone in Scully's condition. The Doctor replies that that wouldn't have made any sense. Mulder calls the number for the psychiatric hospital. Asks for Dr Stroman and is told he has returned to Washington. The contact number he has left with the hospital is the number for the 2400 Court Motel.

2400 Court Motel Mulder finds Dr Stroman has just checked out. He finds a Morley cigarette butt. He asks for a copy of the local call bill, gets Danny to check a number for him.

5.17pm at a suburban house. A cable truck is pulling up the driveway - the driver goes inside. Dr Stroman and the cable guy talk; they are waiting for someone. Mulder goes around the back of the house and as he moves to go inside he hears two shots. Inside he finds X holding the proverbial smoking gun, Dr Stroman and the cable guy dead at his feet. X tells Mulder he is too late. He has lost the evidence. And that he had been told this would happen. Mulder says that he didn't know he was working for X. X explains that he couldn't contact Mulder himself as he was being watched too closely. He couldn't risk compromising himself. Mulder asks why X killed them if he wanted Mulder to expose them? X claims that killing them was always his order. He was just hoping Mulder would get to them first.

Next Mulder asks X what their aim was - to manipulate behaviour, alter decision making processes, what to buy, who to vote for. X laughs and replies "You thinks they'll stop at commerce and politics?" Mulder asks where will they stop and X tells him that's where he failed. Mulder replies "Don't lay this off on me you sneaky son-of-a-bitch. You pulled me into this situation because you didn't have the courage to reveal the truth yourself". He goes on to tell X that he is a coward. X hides in the shadows and feeds him scraps of information. "You made me risk my life, risk my partners life and you never risk your own". X simply smiles and turns to leave. Mulder pulls his gun on X and states that X isn't walking away from this one. X replies "You're risking your life now. You failed. This is your success. Killing me. Truth is, you need me Agent Mulder". X leaves. Mulder clicks the safety back on his gun in frustration.

F.B.I Headquarters, Assistant Director Skinner's Office, May 10 Skinner is seated at his desk perusing a file and looking very stressed. Says there are more questions than answers. They don't know where the device was manufactured or its purpose. Mulder agrees. Scully enters and tells them that there was nothing remarkable about the cable employee. She did find a medical licence for a Dr Henry Stroman in Falls Church Virginia, who died in 1978. Skinner asks about the killer. Mulder replies the killer is still unknown.

Unknown location. X gets into a car with Cancerman who asks if his work has been completed. X replies all personnel and hardware have been removed. Mulder's source has, according to X, been eliminated. To Cancerman's musing about the identity of the source, X replies "That person remains unknown".
