Remains Returned Since Homecoming,

January 27, 1973

If you are able,
save them a place
              inside of you
and save one backward glance
when you are leaving
for the places they can
no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say
you loved them,
            though you may

or may not have always.
Take what they have left
and what they have taught you
with their dying
and keep it with your own.
And in that time
when men decide and feel safe
to call the war insane,
take one moment to embrace
those gentle heroes
you left behind.

Amended last 04/16/99 by the P.O.W. NETWORK
                 ---------------------
P.O.W. NETWORK NOTES:
As of April 16, 2063 men remain "unaccounted for" according to
the Department of Defense. On this date - the NAMES of the 6
noted by the National League (below) were released.
As of April 01, 1999, the National League of Families stated:
"The number of Americans missing from the Vietnam War is now
2,063... The Department of Defense recently provided information
that six additional Americans previously missing from the Vietnam
War have been identified; however, their names are not yet
available. Two of the four are the result of joint recovery in
Cambodia, one in Laos and one in Vietnam. This brings the number
still missing and unaccounted for to 2,063: 1,537 in Vietnam,
444 in Laos, 74 in Cambodia and 8 in the territorial waters of
the PRC."
Due to circumstances as noted below - we question the validity of
the numbers.
28 others have had "remains identified" since 1994, but familes
have asked that the name be "withheld."
Some of these announced identification have been disputed or
rejected (*) by family members. Even when I.D.s are officially
recinded (+), names remain on this list forever.

        COLD WAR IDENTITIES
The remains of 17 US Air Force airmen shot down during the Cold War
have been identified as a group and were buried in Arlington National
Cemetery on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998.
The airmen were crewmembers aboard a C-130 Hercules aircraft on
Sept. 2, 1958 when it was shot down by MiGs over Soviet Armenia.
The C-130 was flying a reconnaissance mission
near the Armenian border when it strayed into Soviet territory.
The aircraft crashed and burned with 17 crewmen on board....
A subsequent review of the case by the Air Force concluded
that no crewmen had been able to escape from the aircraft.
Given the incomplete nature of the remains recovered from the
crash site and those of the six men previously identified,
a group remains identification was made for the entire crew.
