Welcome to our bookstore, the home of best books and
craziest links.
How the books in the Virtual Bookstore are selected?
The books listed below are the best books in my personal library. All books
listed in the following pages meet the following criteria.
-
All books are read and reviewed by myself (except those which are indicated
as "Not Read Yet" or "Unknown").
-
I only listed the books, which I really enjoyed. I did not put all the
books I have read. The books in the Bookstore scores from AVERAGE to MASTERPIECE
in my opinion (which you may not share). I am also planning to include
a list of books you should not waste your money on.
-
All book reviews are written by me. They are not copied from somewhere.
I started writing them for this Virtual Bookstore and some were read ten
to fifteen years ago. It was a pleasure to revisit them. (Please keep in
mind that English is my second language.)
I hope you will also read and enjoy these books.
Most of the book in my library are purchased in Britain or other parts
of Europe so they are British editions. Therefore my books are not identical
with the ones sold by Amazon.com. However, there should be no problem with
US editions since usually it is the cover that changes.
Also I tried to put soft cover versions of the books.. But there may
be some hardcover books that sneaked in. Check it before buying.
How the books are categorized?
I categorized them as I liked. They are in an order that you cannot find
in a normal bookstore. Maybe this is the strongest feature of my bookstore.
A book may belong to more than one category.
For example Thomas
More's Utopia can be found under Science-Fiction.
Why? When Lem describes an imaginary society he becomes a science fiction
writer, because he is contemporary and his society is more advanced then
ours. It was the same for Utopia when More wrote it. Hence, Utopia goes
to Science-Fiction as well.
For example Asimov's
Foundation's Edge goes to Mysticism. Why?
The concept of all beings sharing a single soul and forming a supreme being
are mystic ideas. That's why.
So, do not let category names fool you. Each of them are full of surprises.
Also do not be annoyed if a book from the Artificial
Intelligence section turns out to be a book about Linguistics.
Why build a bookstore?
I have built this Virtual Bookstore for a few personal reasons.
-
Keeping my links tidy. Bookmarking web pages drives me crazy. Because
you cannot structure them neatly. Also they are not available when you
move from one machine or browser to the other. By building these pages,
I can always reach my favourite links in a good structure. I have also
written a program to keep links about books and authors and create the
pages automatically. Now I have a very good database and easy access for
the best books in my library.
-
Sharing. When I read a good book, I want to share this experience
with other people. When another person reads and enjoys a book that I had
recommended, I usually feel that I had done something good in life. Up
until now, this was limited to my friends. But thanks to the web, now I
can put this information somewhere everybody can see and enjoy. If you
read any of these books, I would be very pleased if you drop me an Email
stating whether you liked the book or not.
-
Remembering. I had read some of these books 10-15 years ago. For
this project I had revisited them, browsed thru their pages, read a few
chapters and found out that I really missed them. As I try to update my
database, actually I am refreshing my memory as well.
Why Amazon.com?
My books are linked to Amazon.com. You can easily follow the links from
my page and order the book. If you follow a link and perhaps buy a book,
Amazon.com registers this. Of course they give me a certain incentive for
putting the links, in case anybody buys the book following them. But they
give me something more important than that. At certain intervals, I get
a statistic about how many people followed my links to Amazon.com and how
many people actually bought the book. This is a very valuable information
for me. (see item 2 above)
Furthermore, Amazon.com is a place I usually shop and they provide good
service and good prices. The same quality and price advantage is also available
to people placing orders by following my links.
Do you have a similar Virtual Bookstore or Internet resources
about authors and books?
If so, I will be pleased to exchange links. Please put a link to this page
and send me your URL with E-Mail. I usually update this page every week.
You can use my ArtWork's Page to get graphical
elements for your links.
Also I will be very pleased to add author and book resource links. If
you have them please send them via E-Mail.
