Final Fantasy VIII is still months from release in Japan, yet work on its successor is already underway, this according to sources close to Square Co., Ltd.
Final Fantasy IX is said to be long into development, and all indications are that it will arrive in Japan as soon as fall 1999. This corroborates previous rumors that the game is being worked on side-by-side with Final Fantasy VIII.
Moreover, any speculation that the game is planned for Sony's next console (or any other platforms) can be put to rest; our sources assure us that it will indeed be a PlayStation-only title.
Square itself has yet to make any official announcements concerning Final Fantasy IX.
In related news, Final Fantasy VIII remains without a release date for Japan, although it appears that it will indeed miss a rumored December launch there. Stateside, the game is still on track for a fall 1999 date with store shelves.
