I realize that some might think my tastes in movies rather cockeyed and juvenile, but I really have to make a recommendation:

See "Blast from the Past." Brandon Frazier, Alicia Silverstone, Dave Foley, Christopher Walken, Sissy Spacek. Silly premise: In 1962, CalTech scientist and Commie-hater Christopher Walken builds a huge bomb shelter in case the Reds nuke us. During the Cuban Missile crisis, he ushers his pregnant wife (Spacek) down into the shelter. And wouldn't you know it? A plane crashes in the neighborhood, which they believe to be an a-bomb. So they seal the shelter for 35 years (half life of uranium, doncha know) and ultimately send out Brandon Frazier-- who's lived his whole life watching Honeymooners repeats and dancing with his mother to Perry Como-- out into the mutant-filled world of 1998 to fetch more supplies.

Silly premise-- but allow the film its premise and it works in every way possible.

I'd review it but my review would be rather gushy and I don't wish to poison the well. But this movie is terrific. It's funny, it's romantic, it has a message. It has heart.

Well, that's all I'll say. It just came out on video and did nothing business at the box office. But it's worth a rental.
