Return

You mean the lesbian gym teacher that heroically shields the girls field hockey team with her own body, while the other coachs cower in the lockerroom?

As promised: my review of The Hanging Garden.

This film resonated with me. I think it is because I left home at 18 and severed most of the ties to family and home. When I went back, I too saw the ghosts of my childhood lurking about.

This is a film about a real family. A bully father, a resentful mother, a grandmother with Alzheimer's, a tough daughter and a fat son. The daughter becomes hardened to deal with her family. The son becomes a compulsive eater at a young age.

This is a family that has a big secret too. Well done.

Sarah Polley is great. I saw her name in the credits but it took awhile before I recognized her in the film. What a great actress.

Finally the best dialogue ever between a mother and her gay son:

Mom: Do you have a friend?

Son: Yes.

Mom: What's his name?

Son: Dick.

Mom: What does your Dick do?

Son: Computers.

Mom: Do you love him?

Son: Funny, that's what he always asks.....Yes. I love Dick.
