Return

Well, I just saw Dogma, and all I can say is that it must be something that only those of you who start off believing in God can find either aggravating or uplifting. Anyone who has the warm fluffy "gosh, we'll all go to heaven, don't worry about those nasty rules" will enjoy this movie, whether they are left or right politically speaking. Those who are of a more righteous bent will be unhappy at the blasphemy, and those of us who see both righteous and pink blankie religion as inexplicable will watch a comedy of reasonable quality and scratch our heads at the fuss.

In fact, I thought it was a silly little movie, redeemed by very nice performances and some funny moments. Affleck and Damon are more than pretty props--Damon in particular is scarily effective in parts. Linda Fiorentino is, as always, effortlessly convincing. Be grateful that Alanis wasn't available to play the lead (she was Smith's first pick). Rickman was fine, and I guess those two duuuuudes are in all Smith's movies? I like Silent Bob--Smith is kinda cute for that body type.

The plot isn't all that surprising or involving--I would have rather seen an adaptation of Good Omens, by Terry Pratchet and Neil Gaiman. A far more entertaining story, and a lot less violence.

If you haven't seen it yet, be aware that it is extremely violent.
