Last night I went to a screening of "Pitfall" (1948) at the American Cinematheque with star Lizabeth Scott and director Andre DeToth in attendance. If you can find this on video snap it up. A very subtle low-key film noir starring Dick Powell as a bored insurance investigator who meets Scott a "bad girl" who's not atall as bad as we first suspect. Great supporting work by Raymond Burr as a truly loathesome private detective.
Scott is getting really good at these Q & A sessions. And she really enjoys them too. DeToth is in a wheelchair now, but his mind is as sharp as ever, and he had many interestingly dry things to say about "film noir" being "basically just realistic movies. They're what's life is really like most of the time."
And now for the best part -- Andre DeToth is 100 years old!
