"Happy Together" is Wong Kar-Wei's
film about a Chinese couple : Leslie Cheung (of "Farewell My
Concubine") and Tony Leung, who go to Argentina for a
vacation with the prospect of moving there permanently. For
they're doing this just at the moment that Hong Kong is going
back to Chinese rule. The moment they arrive, however, break up
-- very messily. But they can't seem to get out of each other's
lives. The less phelgmatic of the two gets a job at a noodle shop
where a young apprentice cook, who is apparently just coming out,
falls in love with him. They don't get together, however, as the
older one is still shell-shocked over the break-up. It's an
extraordinary film of subtle moods and moments, the likes of
which haven't been seen since the best of Antonioni (
"Eclipse," IMO). And it's beautifully shot by the
amazing Chris Doyle.
