Return

Gladiator is clearly the finest big-budget summer smash to be released thus far. Not because of Russell Crowe's muscular sweatiness or his taciturn testosteroniness, but simply because of the story, plain and simple. There are exactly two stories in the world, dying to be told over and over again: the struggle for love and the struggle for power. Gladiator is both of them. It has all the elements of conflict that drive a clear and engaging narrative, and, to top it all off, it embraces one of history's grandest civilizations. I've seen it twice. If you haven't seen it, go.
